On Friday, June 15, 2018 at 11:50pmCT, Columbia Police Officer Anthony Darnell initiated contact with the operator of a 2005 Nissan car after he observed it parked behind a local business that was closed. The vehicle was operated by 49-year-old Vickie Jeffries of Columbia. After interviewing the driver, Officer Darnell (who was assisted by Officer Jamie Cole) believed there were narcotics in the vehicle but the owner denied consent to search the auto.
Then Columbia Police K9 Officer John Dial and his partner Gunner were called to assist. Upon arrival, a positive hit was made by K9 Gunner and his handler. A search was conducted and methamphetamine was located in the vehicle.
Officer Darnell placed Vickie Jeffries under arrest and lodged her in the Adair County Regional Jail on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance 1st degree (Methamphetamine) and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
Gunner has been with the department for only a couple months training and just recently got his certification in drug searches less than 48 hrs prior to callout.
Columbia Police Chief Jason Cross made this statement regarding the assistance of newly certified K-9 Gunner:
“This is a example of how beneficial the K-9 program is going to be to Columbia Police Department and it's ongoing commitment to combating the drug issues in Adair County. In less than 2 days of his certification the program has already had it's first success.“
