(Taylor County-July 31, 2018) On July 31st, 2018 at approximately 1:05amET, Taylor County Dispatch contacted KSP Post 15 in Columbia requesting units respond to the Taylor County Detention Center due to a riot involving approximately 30 inmates. Units began arriving at the detention center at approximately 1:10amET and were assisted by the Taylor County Sheriff’s Department as well as the Campbellsville Police Department along with numerous Taylor County Deputy Jailers. Shortly after the arrival of Law Enforcement, the jailers were able to detain and regain control of the inmates.
Through investigation it was learned that a disturbance had originated from one particular cell housing 37 inmates. Several of the inmates covered the cameras and detached a steel bedframe from the floor and began using it and other objects to destroy the interior of the cell. The inmates also used the bedframe to attempt to breach the door. Significant damage was done to the interior of one cell and the wall was broken around the door nearly breaching it into a hallway. Several inmates have been removed and transported to the Marion County Detention Center. The Taylor County Detention Center is now safely operational. There were no injuries detected or reported at the scene.
Trooper Dexter Colvin is continuing the investigation. Criminal charges are forthcoming.
