SPRINGFIELD, KY - Springfield police believe they stopped a man planning a mass shooting at a Washington County business.
Officers were called to LB Manufacturing on a report of a suspicious vehicle and trespassing complaint Monday afternoon, November 19, 2018. Police say the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Matthew Smith, became combative and raised a gun toward an officer. After a brief scuffle, the officer took Smith to the ground and handcuffed him. Police said Smith had several guns in his vehicle, including one that appeared to be a fully automatic weapon. Police say all of the handguns on Smith’s body were fully loaded with a round in the chamber. Police also found a Colt AR 15 A-2 with a 40-round magazine in the front passenger seat and a .308 rifle was under that firearm. While clearing the AR-15, police realized that it had been modified to be fully automatic.
Smith is being held on charges of Attempted Murder of a police offficer, Resisting Arrest, Criminal Trespass and Wanton Endangerment. The Federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms is assisting in the investigation.
