Columbia Police investigated a 3-vehicle collision this afternoon (Thursday) that resulted in the deaths of an Adair County man and a Russell County man; A third person is in critical condition.

On Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017 at approximately 12:55pmCT, Columbia Police received a dispatch from Adair County 911 to respond to KY 80 East (Russell Springs Road). Officers were responding to a 3-vehicle collision with at least one patient entrapped. The preliminary investigation indicates that Jimmie Bennett, age 74 of Columbia, KY was traveling west on KY 80 in a 2010 Hyundai Sonata when he struck a 2000 Ford van being operated by 49 year old Micheal Bush of Columbia, KY in the rear of the auto. Bennett’s vehicle then crossed into the east bound lane of traffic where it was involved in a secondary collision in which it was struck in the drivers side of the vehicle by a 2016 GMC operated by 80-year-old Paul Banks of Russell Springs and his passenger 60-year-old Dwight D. Banks also of Russell Springs.

Jimmie Bennett was pronounced dead at the scene by Adair Co. Coroner Todd Akin.  Micheal Bush, Paul Banks and Dwight Banks were all treated at the scene and transported to TJ Health Columbia by Adair County EMS. Micheal Bush was treated and released. Paul Banks was flown by helicopter via Air Methods to University of KY Hospital in Lexington where he is listed in critical condition.  Dwight Banks was flown by helicopter via Air Evac to University of KY but was forced to make a landing due to the patients condition becoming severely unstable at Casey County Hospital. Banks succumbed to his injuries shortly after landing and was pronounced deceased.

KY 80 remained shut down for approximately 2 hours while the scene was being investigated. CPD Sgt Gary Roy is in charge of the investigation and was assisted by Sgt. Jr Murphy.
