CASEY COUNTY FISCAL COURT AWARDED $540,000 IN DISCRETIONARY FUNDS FOR CRITICAL ROAD IMPROVEMENT

SOMERSET, Ky. (April 15, 2019) – During Monday’s Casey County Fiscal Court meeting, a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Department of Rural and Municipal Aid official announced $540,000 in discretionary funds for vital resurfacing work on five roads. Resurfacing repairs address existing surface cracks, potholes, raveling, and base failures. The half a million dollar investment supports Governor Matt Bevin’s commitment to prioritize transportation infrastructure projects and increase economic opportunity across the Commonwealth.

“The Bevin Administration continues to focus on taking care of what we have at both the state and local level to address critical infrastructure needs that improve safety and support job creation and retention,” said KYTC Secretary Greg Thomas. “This funding builds upon existing transportation investments and allows the Cabinet to collaborate with local governments to identify projects that will have large impacts to communities.”

Casey County Judge-Executive Randy Dial identified these roads as being among the most critical in the county.

“I would like to thank Governor Matt Bevin, Secretary Greg Thomas, and Commissioner Gray Tomblyn II for the approval of these requests through the governor’s discretionary fund,” said Judge-Executive Dial. “These funds will help tremendously in our efforts to make our county roads safer for the traveling public. I appreciate the Bevin administration’s commitment to work with local officials across the Commonwealth to address our infrastructure needs.”

Projects submitted to the Department of Rural and Municipal Aid for discretionary fund consideration were evaluated by KYTC district staff to assess the condition of roads and determine the most critical needs based on factors such as safety, economic impact, and traffic volumes.

“After a very wet winter, many Casey County roads are in need of resurfacing,” said Sen. Jimmy Higdon. “This $540,000 in discretionary funding will be a big help to many in Casey County. Thanks to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and Governor Bevin for hearing our request for additional funding.”

The roads set to be addressed are used by many Amish businesses, as well as school buses carrying children to and from school.

Rep. Daniel Elliot also expressed his gratitude for the vital resurfacing work.

“I’m grateful to the Governor for his approval of these needed discretionary funds for Casey County,” said Rep. Elliot. “I will continue to work with both state and local elected officials to ensure that Casey County is able to meet the transportation needs of its citizens.”

The Casey County Fiscal Court is responsible for administering the work, and KYTC will reimburse the county for the projects.

Resurfacing work will address:

  •          Lower Brush Creek Road (County Road 1254) from milepoint 0.00 to milepoint 2.02
  •          Lower Brush Creek Road (County Road 1254) from milepoint 2.02 to milepoint 3.80
  •          Oak Hill Road (County Road 1116) from milepoint 1.62 to milepoint 3.49
  •          Nubbin Ridge Road (County Road 1227) from milepoint 1.35 to milepoint 2.54
  •          Doe Creek Road (County Road 1046) from milepoint 0.00 to milepoint 1.72
