CUMBERLAND CO. FISCAL COURT AWARDED $441,730 IN DISCRETIONARY FUNDS FOR CRITICAL PAVEMENT IMPROVEMENTS

SOMERSET, Ky. (July 8, 2019) – During Monday’s Cumberland County Fiscal Court meeting, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Department of Rural and Municipal Aid Commissioner Gray Tomblyn II announced $441,730 in discretionary funds for vital resurfacing work on seven roads. Resurfacing repairs address existing surface cracks, potholes, raveling, and base failures. The investment supports Governor Matt Bevin’s commitment to prioritize transportation infrastructure projects and increase economic opportunity across the Commonwealth.

“The Bevin Administration continues to focus on taking care of what we have at both the state and local level to address critical infrastructure needs that improve safety and support job creation and retention,” said KYTC Secretary Greg Thomas. “This funding builds upon existing transportation investments and allows the Cabinet to collaborate with local governments to identify projects that will have large impacts to communities.”

Cumberland County Judge-Executive John Phelps Jr. identified these roads as being among the most critical in the county.

“Thank you to Governor Matt Bevin for recognizing the needs that Cumberland County has for resurfacing this portion of our county roads,” said Judge-Executive Phelps. “Myself and all of the magistrates understand how tight transportation funds currently are. This is the largest amount of discretionary funds that Cumberland County has received since my tenure as Judge Executive began in 2011. I’m sure the ability to give Cumberland County this amount of funding this year is due to the better management of transportation funds by the Bevin Administration.”

Projects submitted to the Department of Rural and Municipal Aid for discretionary fund consideration were evaluated by KYTC district staff to assess the condition of roads and determine the most critical needs based on factors such as safety, economic impact, and traffic volumes.

The roads set to be addressed provide access to more than 87 homes. The Cumberland County Fiscal Court is responsible for administering the work, and KYTC will reimburse the county for the projects.

Resurfacing work will address:
  • Lewis Creek Road (County Road 1467) from milepoint 1.06 to milepoint 1.296
  • Garrett Creek Road (County Road 1319) from milepoint 1.64 to milepoint 3.032
  • Zeketown Road (County Road 1227) from milepoint 0.00 to milepoint 2.32
  • Lawson Bottom Road (County Road 1021) from milepoint 0.00 to milepoint 4.415
  • Brush Creek Road (County Road 1009) from milepoint 0.84 to milepoint 1.89
  • Joe Scott Road (County Road 1157) from milepoint 0.44 to milepoint 1.10
  • Beech Grove Road (County Road 1347) from milepoint 0.00 to milepoint 2.10
