R.S. AWARDED $137,700 IN DISCRETIONARY FUNDS FOR CRITICAL PAVEMENT IMPROVEMENTS

SOMERSET, Ky. (Oct. 3, 2019) – During a meeting with officials from the City of Russell Springs, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Department of Rural and Municipal Aid Commissioner Gray Tomblyn II announced $137,700 in discretionary funds for vital resurfacing work on Dowell Road, Gentry Mill Road and Cade Road. Resurfacing repairs address existing surface cracks, potholes, raveling, and base failures.

The investment supports Governor Matt Bevin’s commitment to prioritize transportation infrastructure projects and increase economic opportunity across the Commonwealth.

“The Bevin Administration continues to focus on taking care of what we have at both the state and local level to address critical infrastructure needs that improve safety and support job creation and retention,” said KYTC Secretary Greg Thomas. “This funding builds upon existing transportation investments and allows the Cabinet to collaborate with local governments to identify projects that will have large impacts to communities.”

City of Russell Springs Mayor Eddie Thomas identified these roads as being among the most critical in the city.

“I would like to thank Governor Bevin and his Administration for their commitment to helping Russell Springs grow and prosper,” said Mayor Thomas. “Without the support of Governor Bevin, I know these road projects would not be possible.”

Projects submitted to the Department of Rural and Municipal Aid for discretionary fund consideration were evaluated by KYTC district staff to assess the condition of roads and determine the most critical needs based on factors such as safety, economic impact, and traffic volumes.

“I’m pleased to see that Russell Springs has received funding for these much-needed resurfacing projects,” said Sen. Max Wise. “I look forward to their completion knowing the community will benefit greatly from upgraded roadways. I’d like to thank the Governor for working with the General Assembly to ensure we have funding for road repairs throughout the Commonwealth.”

The roads provide access to more than 50 homes, 11 businesses and the local hospital.

“Resurfacing Dowell, Gentry Mill and Cade roads will go a long way toward making driving in Russell Springs both smoother and safer,” said Rep. Jeff Hoover. “I’m extremely pleased to see that this area is a priority for the Transportation Cabinet.”

The Russell Springs City Council is responsible for administering the work, and KYTC will reimburse the city for the projects.

Resurfacing work will address:

  • Dowell Road (City Street 2123) – resurfacing of 0.816 miles
  • Gentry Mill Road (City Street 2035) – resurfacing of 0.409 miles
  • Cade Road (City Street 2014) – resurfacing 0.333 miles
