Sources of Strength, a group from the Adair County High School, presented the new mental health flag to city hall in recognition of Mental Health Month.
The Mental Health Flag was created as a collaboration with over 100 Louisville area mental health organizations, care providers, artists, designers, advocates, and community members to convey support of the efforts of mental health.
The goal is for the flag to become a global symbol for supporting all mental health initiatives and all those affected by mental illness. It is a representative of a shared identity and commitment. Green is known as the mental health awareness color. Yellow is known to represent happiness and hope. The flag’s different shades of color from dark green to yellow represent both a personal journey from a dark place to a happy place, as well as our collective efforts to bring the topic of mental health out of the darkness and into the light. The curved shapes represent as embracing of those suffering from mental illness and an acceptance of mental health as a community focus.
