District 8 Crews Ready for Possible Winter Weather Tonight

SOMERSET, Ky. (Dec. 1, 2025) – Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 8 highway crews are prepared to respond to possible winter weather expected to move through the region early Tuesday.

Snow and ice teams are scheduled to report early Tuesday morning to begin monitoring and treating roadways as necessary. The National Weather Service in Louisville forecasts rain transitioning to snow, with minor accumulations of less than an inch possible in some areas. Crews will monitor conditions throughout the evening and overnight and will report earlier if needed.

Temperatures near freezing overnight may create hazardous travel conditions. Motorists are reminded that bridges, overpasses, and low-lying areas freeze first, even when other sections of roadway remain clear. Drivers should slow down and remain alert for slick spots.

Weather and travel conditions can change quickly during winter weather events. Motorists are encouraged to be prepared and allow extra time for their Tuesday morning commute.

Be Prepared
The following measures will help keep motorists safe:

  • Pay attention to weather advisories—weather may impact your commute.
  • Travel only as necessary during major winter events.
  • Maintain a safe distance from snowplows and heavy highway equipment.
  • Do not pass snowplows on the shoulder.
  • Allow extra time for a slower commute.
  • Winterize your vehicle.
  • Equip your vehicle with blankets, a flashlight, and an emergency supply kit.
  • Know before you go: visit goky.ky.gov and download the free Waze app to check traffic conditions.
  • Eliminate distractions (e.g., phone use, eating) while driving.
  • Cooperate with the Quick Clearance law, which requires drivers to move vehicles to the shoulder following a non-injury crash.
