Sevierville Police Department investigators arrested 34-year-old Enrique Estrada Martinez of Knoxville this afternoon on charges of leaving the scene of an accident involving death (T.C.A. 55-10-101) and driving without a license (T.C.A. 55-50-301).
The arrest was the result of an investigation by the SPD Accident Reconstruction Team and Criminal Investigations Division after a deceased pedestrian was discovered early Monday.
Police allege that Martinez was driving a Ford Transit van when he struck 73-year old Henry Smith of Kentucky and then left the scene without contacting law enforcement.
Martinez was located in Knoxville and taken into custody by SPD officers with the assistance of the Knoxville Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations. SPD also thanks the Sevier County Sheriff's Office and Knox County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in searching for the Ford Transit vehicle.
Martinez was transported to the Sevier County Jail for booking. All persons are considered innocent unless found guilty in a court of law.
