On Thursday, July 30, 2026 at approximately 6:20amCT, deputies with the Adair County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 4000 block of Highway 55 South in reference to a two-vehicle collision.
The preliminary investigation determined that Dustin McGuffin, who was traveling southbound on Highway 55 South, crossed the centerline into the northbound lane of travel. Shawntae Giftee of Indiana was traveling northbound toward Columbia when she observed McGuffin’s vehicle in her lane. Ms. Giftee sounded her horn multiple times, reduced her speed, and attempted to move into the southbound lane in an effort to avoid a collision. Mr. McGuffin then overcorrected, and the vehicles collided.
Adair EMS and the Adair County Fire Department responded promptly to the scene, providing medical care to those involved and assisting with traffic control and scene safety.
The collision was investigated by Adair County Deputy Emily Wall with assistance from Sergeant Josh Durbin.
The Adair County Sheriff’s Office reminds motorists to remain attentive while operating a motor vehicle, avoid distractions, and stay within their designated lane of travel. A momentary lapse in attention can lead to serious or life-threatening consequences.
