Ten Russell County High School students had a unique opportunity recently to observe the Kentucky Supreme Court in session at Campbellsville University.

The students are members of the high school’s social studies Gifted and Talented class, with some also serving as officers in the school’s civics club.
They were accompanied by Gifted and Talented teacher Susie Stephens, Gifted and Talented coordinator Hannah England, Russell County Schools Superintendent Michael Ford and bus driver Micah Lunsford.
Ms. England said the visit provided a valuable learning experience by allowing students to witness the judicial branch at work firsthand, rather than simply reading about it in a textbook or online.

Ms. England credited Campbellsville University political science professor Dr. Sean Williams with orchestrating the entire day for the students and welcoming the Russell County group to campus.

She said the experience also prompted several students to begin talking about pursuing pre-law studies, becoming attorneys and finding ways to become involved in civic engagement and public service.

The visit gave the students an up-close look at Kentucky’s highest court and provided a real-world lesson on the judicial branch of state government.
