The local Search and Rescue (SAR) community is mourning the loss of K9 CJ, a highly decorated tracking and trailing canine assigned to Unit #649, whose dedicated service helped bring answers and hope to families during critical moments.
?Although the department's K9 unit is relatively new, officials noted that CJ quickly established herself as much more than a search resource, becoming an integral part of the team and a beloved member of the department family.
?Alongside her handler, CJ underwent rigorous training to achieve her Advanced Certification in Tracking and Trailing through the National Police Canine Association / National Narcotics Detector Dog Association (NNDDA). The prestigious credential reflected hundreds of hours of grueling discipline, teamwork, and sharp skill in the field.
?"CJ played an important role in the search and rescue community and touched the lives of those who had the privilege of working alongside her," the department shared in an official tribute. "Her work helped bring hope to families during difficult times and demonstrated the incredible bond that exists between a working dog and their partner."
?Colleagues and fellow first responders are extending their condolences to CJ’s handler, family, and teammates as they process the loss. While CJ's watch has officially ended, department members emphasized that her legacy and impact on the community will not be forgotten.![]()
