Gene “Tex” Flanagan, 86, of Russell Springs, KY passed away peacefully, surrounded by the family and friends he cherished and the animals he adored. Born at home a century late on October 27, 1938 in Jamestown, KY, he was the favorite son born to the late Alvin and Zilpha Stephens Flanagan.
Tex was a beloved figure in his community and a protector of his family. His early years were spent walking a path of defiance and rebellion. Tex was known to many as an outlaw, being no stranger to the lawless ways of the world. Tex’ conversion to Christianity was nothing short of a miracle; his transformation was a testament to the power of faith and the belief that anyone, no matter their past, could seek and find redemption.
In the Pleasant Hill Community, Tex was known for his warm heart and his protective nature, making his rounds twice a day to watch over his neighborhood’s properties. Where he had once been feared and misunderstood, he became loved and admired by those who knew him. Always quick with a smile, a kind word or a helping hand, Tex became a fixture in Pleasant Hill.
Tex had a special love for animals; his dogs, cats, mules and horses weren’t just pets, to him, they were family. His dogs would follow him loyally, his cats would curl up by his side, and his horses were always well groomed and content. Those who visited his home often found Tex sitting on his porch, his loyal dogs at his feet with the sound of the wind rustling through the trees. It was a simple life, but one he worked hard to create.
Tex’ faith became the cornerstone of his life, he was a member of Jamestown Christian Church where he gained a wealth of friends and a loving family through it’s fellow members. He will be remembered for the way he turned his life around “an outlaw turned good guy”, the compassion he showed to all and for the deep love and understanding he had for family, friends and animals. Though he will be missed dearly, his spirit lives on in the lives he touched. We can take comfort in knowing that Tex is now in the arms of his Savior, at peace and free from the struggles of his past.
