David Joseph Abell, 71, of Knifley, KY, the son of the late James E. Abell and Mary Bessie Wethington Abell, was born October 1, 1952 in Taylor County, KY, and departed this life on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at Taylor Regional Hospital. 

 

Mr. Abell was of the Catholic Faith and attended St. Bernard Catholic Church. He was a lifelong farmer and raised beef cattle and tobacco. He enjoyed quail hunting, trading, spending time with family, helping his neighbors, and was known as a giver.

Bessie Catharine Jackson Dix, 80, of Jamestown, KY passed away Friday, January 26, 2024 at her granddaughter’s home. She was born February 2, 1943 in Sparks, Wisconsin, a daughter of the late Charles Benthal and Mary Ellen Hogan Jackson.
 

Bessie was a homemaker who loved taking care of her family. She was also a former cook at the Russell County Jail.  Bessie was the type of person that turned into a “Grandma” to everyone she met.  She was loved immensely and will be missed by all her family.

Ann Irene Anderson, 92, of Longwood, FL passed away Saturday, January 27, 2024 at the Barren County Health and Rehabilitation Center in Glasgow, KY. She was born in Saint Combs, Scotland on November 22, 1931 to the late Alec and Lily Buchan.


Mrs. Anderson was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Scott Anderson; a daughter, Karin Steen; and a brother, Alan Buchan.

 

She was a member and former Church Administrator for the Saint Stephens Lutheran Church in Longwood, Florida. Mrs. Anderson enjoyed spending time with her family and her church family, especially her grandchildren, and she also enjoyed doing crafts.

Charles Lee "Chuck" Smith, 57, Jeffersonville, Indiana (formerly of Russell Springs, KY)

 

Charles Lee “Chuck” Smith, 57, of Jeffersonville, Indiana (formerly of Russell Springs, KY), passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at his residence. He was born July 1, 1966 in Gibson City, Illinois, a son of the late Ray Smith and Sandra Bridgwater Smith Akin. 

 

Chuck was a United States Army veteran, serving his country for many years domestically and on foreign soil. While stationed in Iraq and in Kuwait, he started driving semi-trucks for military operations. After his discharge from the military, Chuck drove trucks for different employers that took him across the country. He was a skilled machinery mechanic and worked as a security officer for some time. Chuck loved to travel and never knew a stranger. He enjoyed fishing and playing music. Chuck was also a big Willie Nelson fan and was known to joke and carry-on. To his friends at work in Indiana, he was “Chucky from Kentucky”.

Ruth Joan Hopkins, 87, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset, KY.  She was born September 23, 1936 in the Salem community of Russell County, a daughter of the late Lewis and Alpha Smith Hammond. 

 

Ms. Ruth was a former employee of Fruit of the Loom in Jamestown. She was an accomplished bowler, finishing 3rd in a professional bowling tournament in Reno, Nevada. Ms. Ruth loved music of all kinds and enjoyed singing karaoke. She was a loving mother and grandmother.

Larry Bottoms, 77, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Friday, January 19, 2024 at home. He was born in Columbia, KY on January 16, 1947, a son of the late Della (Moss) and Chester Bottoms.

Larry served in the U.S. Air Force and was a truck driver for Walmart.

Sharon Elizabeth Benson, 78, Russell Springs, KY

 

Sharon Elizabeth Benson, 78, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Thursday, January 4, 2024. She was born on February 8, 1945 in Dayton, KY,  a daughter of the late Toby and Amanda Tolson.

 

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a sister, Becky Haun. 

 

Sharon was a dedicated and compassionate nurse who knew it was her calling early in life. She graduated from the Jewish Hospital College of Nursing in 1966 and worked as a nurse in Ohio, Florida, and Kentucky. In 2001, Sharon began her career as a Nurse Practitioner, but always remained a nurse at heart. Nursing was her true love and her passion, and for 57 years she was lucky enough to call it her career. The thought of retiring never crossed her mind because she "just loves it.” Sharon's vibrant and strong personality drove her to always strive for excellence while being tenacious when faced with a challenge. She is irreplaceable in so many ways and will be dearly missed. 

 

Sharon was a faithful servant of the Lord and attended Jamestown Christian Church where she enjoyed worshipping and gathering with her fellow parishioners.

Lauren J. Antle, 75, formerly of Russell Springs, KY passed away Thursday, January 11, 2024 in Alsip, Illinois. She was born January 29, 1948 in Chicago, Illinois, a daughter of the late Steve and Mary Klisewicz Olszewski.  
 
Lauren was a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years and was also a member of the choir. She and her late husband, Jerry Antle, were owners of Town and Country Realty.

Claristeen Baker Reliford, 86, of Columbia KY was born to the late Edd Lee and Lillie Mae Coomer on April 12, 1937 in Adair County, KY.  She passed to her heavenly home on Sunday, January 21, 2024 in Columbia, KY.

 

She was a former employee of Circle R Restaurant and Summit Manor Nursing Home.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard “Peck” Reliford in 2021, one sister, Mary Helen Baker Bunch, and four brothers: Woodson Baker, Clarence Embry Baker, Willie Elmer Baker and Stanley Baker.

Betty Gail Downey, 78, of Russell Springs, KY passed from this life on Friday, January 19, 2024 at Russell County Hospital. She was born in Louisville, KY on February 25, 1945, a daughter of the late Benjamin and Cora Elsie Stephens Downey. 
 

Betty was a member of the West 80 Church of God and a former long-time employee of Fruit of the Loom in Jamestown. She gave most of her adult life to raising kids. Betty loved being with her children and grandchildren and was always up for family get-togethers. She played the piano (as well as guitar and bass). She loved music of all kinds and enjoyed singing.

Mary Lois Emerson, 93, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2024 at Russell County Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Clarence W. and Olga Swanson Bradley. 

 

She was a homemaker and a former childcare provider. Lois or “Nanny”, as she was known to many, professed her faith in Christ Jesus at an early age and was a faithful member of the Russell Springs First Baptist Church, as long as her health allowed. 
 

As well as her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan G. Emerson, whom she married on October 6, 1950; her infant grandson, Adam Vinson Rexroat;  her sister, Emogene Calhoun; her sister-in-law, Darlene Bradley; and her great-nephew, Erik Brandon Emerson.

Bonnie Robertson Richardson, 76, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Friday, January 19, 2024 at Russell County Hospital. Born December 31, 1947 in Russell Springs, she was the daughter of the late Willis Oliver and Lois Marie Luttrell Robertson. 

 

Bonnie was a loving wife, mother, and nana, and she enjoyed tending to her flower gardens, vegetable garden, reading, and spending time with her family. She had a heart of gold and always put others before herself. Bonnie was a long-time member of New Friendship United Baptist Church.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Robertson Thorsen; a brother, Bobby Robertson; and a grandson, Dustin Oakes.

Jack Phillips, 68, of Russell Springs, KY passed from this life on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at Fair Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation in Jamestown. He was born in Pennington Gap, Virginia on May 15, 1955, a son of Wayne Phillips and Emily Tankersley Harris. 
 

Jack had moved with his daughter to Russell Springs late last year, where his mother and sisters reside. He might be described as a man who liked to “boss you around”. Jack was soft spoken and kind, always greeting with a smile; and to quote his niece, he was “fiercely protective of those he loved”. He loved watching football and going fishing. Jack enjoyed eating chocolate (especially Turtles), drinking coffee, and listening to classic rock music. He loved reading fantasy genre books, with Stephen King works among some of his favorites.

Nova Ann Wright Johnson, 82, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Saturday, January 13, 2024 at Fair Oaks Health and Rehabilitation in Jamestown, KY. She was born April 28, 1941 in the Rowena community of Russell County, the daughter of the late Warren Andy Wright & Nova Myrtle Brown Wright.
 

She was a loving mother and grandmother and was well known throughout her community as a hardworking Christian lady. Throughout her life she had a variety of jobs, her last before retirement was working in the dietary department at Fair Oaks Nursing Home. She enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowerbeds, farming, quilting, and working puzzles. Nova was a long-time member of Pine Grove Separate Baptist Church.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arlo Johnson; two sons: Lonnie & Ricky Johnson; one daughter, Peggy Stratton; three brothers: Virgil, Tracy, & Terry Wright; and one sister, Auda Mae Tucker.

Helen Fay Waggener McKinley, 91, of Columbia, KY passed away Saturday, January 13, 2024. 

 

Fay was the mother of four who worked to get her teaching degree at Western Kentucky University. She enjoyed her college accomplishments, her long career as librarian at Shepherd Grade School until her retirement, and then substitute teaching.

 

She served as secretary of the Adair County Veterans of Foreign Wars as an auxiliary member. She belonged to the Columbia Baptist Church, and the Adair County Homemakers.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, E.P. and Audrey Chelf Waggener; her husband, Lucian Grant "Peanut" McKinley; two daughters: Marcia Burton Cook and Mitzi Bault; a grandchild, Stewart; one sister, Jean Cravens; and two brothers: Arthur Lee Waggener and Ed Waggener.

Nathan Parrish, 79, of Russell Springs, KY passed from this life on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at Fair Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation. He was born August 29, 1944 in Hillsboro, Wisconsin, the son of the late Norval and Fern Hadley Parrish. 
 

He was an artist who used those talents in his own business, Parrish Signs. Nathan was a Christian and was considered to be a tough, “man’s man”.

Shirley Fay Gowen Corbin, 86 years, 11 months, and 14 days of Columbia, KY departed this life on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at T.J. Health Columbia surrounded by her family. She was born in Columbia, KY on January 28, 1937 to the late Harbert and Beatrice Compton Gowen.  
 
She united in marriage to Odell Corbin on June 25, 1955, in Mansville, KY and he preceded her in death on May 2, 2022.
 
Mrs. Corbin professed her faith in Christ and was a member of the Columbia First Church of the Nazarene. She was a former employee of Fruit of the Loom, an instructional assistant with Adair County Public Schools and a beloved babysitter. She enjoyed shopping, spending time with her family and friends and cooking for them; her chicken and dumplings, pies, and caramel cake were often requested.

Bessie Jane Chumbley Shepherd, 91, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Thursday, January 11, 2024 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born March 5, 1932 in Adair County, a daughter of the late Haydon and Betty Robertson Harmon. 

 

Bessie was a member of Faith General Baptist Church. She always loved being able to grow a large vegetable garden. She enjoyed canning her harvest and cooking wonderful meals for her family. Bessie was also an avid fan of “Wheel of Fortune.”

Joyce Lee Ettner, 70, of Jamestown, KY passed away Saturday, January 6, 2024 at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset. She was born February 11, 1953 in Fort Campbell, KY, a daughter of the late Herbert Lee and Pauline Coffey Womack.  

 

Joyce was a member of Pleasant Hill Community Church. She lived with God as her guide, her rock, the center focus of her life. Joyce knew the importance of love and trusting in the Lord, and she shared her thoughts with her family in letters that she wrote to them.
 

“God has given me a lot in my lifetime but the best thing He blessed me with was a heart full of love.”

“God knows exactly what He is doing – He lets us go through rough times – but it sure makes us enjoy and treasure the good times.”

“Please always love one another and stay close.  It is so very important.”

And maybe her most important instruction of all……” Trust in the Lord. I do.”

 

Joyce leaves behind many wonderful memories and a beautiful legacy of love for her family and friends to treasure.

Belinda Sue Tucker, 64, of Columbia, KY passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at her residence. She was born on November 29, 1959 in Dayton, OH to the late Sam and Stella Louise Watson Tucker.
 
Sue spent her life serving the Lord, her faith is something she shared with everyone she met. Playing the piano in church and singing His praises was truly her passion.
 
Ms. Tucker was a member of the South Greensburg Baptist Church and a retired teacher at John Adair Middle School and Knifley Grade Center before becoming the school Administrator at the Adair County Youth Development Center.  After retirement from the school system, she worked as a VHR Social Security Hearing Officer and most recently as a Pharmacy Technician at Adair Drug. She enjoyed Quilting, traveling, playing the piano, being a part of the Campbellsville Emaus Community and spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren.

Shawn Patrick Murphy, 43, of Jeffersontown, KY passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at Jefferson Manor Rehab and Wellness Center. He was born in Louisville, KY on September 13, 1980 to Kenneth Murphy of Jeffersontown, KY, and the late Rebecca Faye Burton Murphy.

 

Mr. Murphy attended the Highview Baptist Church and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Hazel Rogers Curry, 92, formerly of Richmond, KY and the widow of the late Embry Curry, died on Sunday, December 31, 2023 at her home in Columbia, KY. She was born July 29, 1931 in Jackson County KY to the late George W. and America Dean Rogers.

 

She was retired from Westinghouse and Phillips Lighting and a member of the Broadway Baptist Church.

Richard E. Foley, 87, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at his residence. He was born on January 13, 1936 in Russell Springs, a son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Lowell Foley.
 
Mr. Foley was a HAM radio operator, a 20-year veteran of the United States Air Force, and a member of New Victory Baptist Church.

Earl G. Bennett, 88, Columbia, KY


Earl G. Bennett, 88, of Columbia, KY passed away Monday, January 1, 2024 at T.J. Health Columbia. He was born on January 1, 1936 in Jamestown, KY, a son of the late Russell M. Bennett and Martha Susan Wade Bennett.

Mr. Bennett was retired from the United States Navy after 34 years of service as a "Hull Technician Master Chief Master Diver." Once retired, he came back to his home community of Sano, living for over 30 years where he worked as a farmer, raising cattle and growing his own crops including hay, corn and tobacco.

Kenny Grider, 77, of Jamestown, KY passed away Friday, December 29, 2023 at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset, KY. He was born in Somerset, KY on June 26, 1946, a son of the late Nina (Beck) and Clyde Grider.

Kenny was a Veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Vietnam War and he worked in construction.

Charles Nathan Burton, 48, Columbia, KY

 

Charles Nathan Burton, 48, of Columbia, KY passed away Friday, December 29, 2023 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset, KY. He was born in Columbia, KY on February 24, 1975 to Phillip Burton and Vickie Goodin Milby who survives.

 

Nathan attended the New Hope Separate Baptist Church as a youth and was of the Christian faith. He was known for his tree trimming in the area and always caught everyone’s attention with his adventurous videos of his work. He enjoyed hiking and being outdoors but most of all spending time with his family and friends.
