OTIS BURTON, 87, COLUMBIA, KY

 

Otis Burton, 87, of Columbia, KY died Saturday, May 29, 2021 at the University of Kentucky Hospital from injuries sustained in an auto accident. He was born in Adair County on January 30, 1934 to the late Robert and Dorinda Burton. 
 

He was the husband of the late Nellie Nancy Harmon Burton.

 

Mr. Burton formerly attended the Calvary Temple Church and enjoyed dairy farming and spending time with his family.

4 children: Mary Betty Helm (Kenny), Morris Benny Burton and John Jeffro Burton (Karen) all of Columbia, KY; Marilyn Bessie Judd (Tony) of Greensburg, KY

ELDER PAUL DARRELL WILSON, 78, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY


Elder Paul Darrell Wilson, 78, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Saturday, May 29, 2021 at his residence. He was born September 23, 1942 in Russell Springs, KY, the son of the late Erville Paul Wilson and Eudell McBeath Wilson.
 

Paul was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the 82nd Airborne Division, and a construction worker. He was a Baptist minister and pastored several churches in the area. He was a member of Salem United Baptist Church.

MARILYN MCKINNEY NOEL, 68, SHELBYVILLE, KY

 
Marilyn McKinney Noel, 68, of Shelbyville, KY (formerly of Adair County, KY) died Saturday, March 13, 2021 at her residence. She was born on January 18, 1953 in Columbia, KY to the late Edward and Helen Willis McKinney.
 

She was a wonderful person and a terrific mother. She loved teaching at Bullitt East High School and wanted to inspire her students. She received the Teacher of the Year Award during her career.  

 

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her beloved son, William Trenton Noel.

Marsha (Wells) Roberts, 57, of Columbia, KY died Saturday, May 29, 2021 at her home. She was born January 24, 1964 in Barren County, KY to the late Murrell Brazil and Thelma Floyd Wells. 
 

Marsha retired from the Adair County EMS as an EMT, was an avid floral designer and attended Asbury United Methodist Church.

JAQUELINE PACKARD BARRETT, 82, NEW ALBANY, IN

 

Jacqueline Jo Barrett, 82, of New Albany, IN died Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at the Green Valley Care Center in New Albany, IN. She was born on August 9, 1938 to the late Cornelius and Lillian Fortner Packard. 

 

She was the wife of the late Estle Thomas Barrett.

 

Mrs. Barrett was of the Southern Baptist faith and was a Foster Parent to many children.  She loved horses and spending time with her family and friends.

Ola Mae Hays, 90, of Jamestown, KY passed away Monday, May 24, 2021 at Summit Manor Nursing Home in Columbia, KY. She was born in Jamestown, KY on May 27, 1930, a daughter of the late Ema D. (Clayton) and Herman Garr.
 
After retiring from Russell Sportswear, she worked many years at the Catholic Thrift Store.

Herbert Ray Holmes, 81, of Columbia, KY died Sunday, May 23, 2021 at T. J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow. He was born on June 19, 1939 in Adair County to the late Lindsey and Thelma Neat Holmes.

 

Mr. Holmes was a member of the Purdy Baptist Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing and working on lawnmowers, but he most enjoyed mowing his yard and spending time with his family.

Sue Carender, 72, of Jabez, KY passed from this life on Friday, May 21, 2021 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset. Born on April 18, 1949, in Eli, KY, she was a daughter of the late William Spencer and Olva Kelsey Harris.


Sue was a former cashier at Wal-Mart. In her spare time, she enjoyed bird watching, gardening, sewing and quilting.

Julie May Owens, 38, of Bardstown, KY passed away at her home on Tuesday, May 18, 2021. Born on May 10, 1983, at Fort Knox, she was the daughter of Stephen W. Owens and Mary E. Carter. 

 

Julie was a homemaker and a loving mother. She enjoyed scrapbooking and listening to all genres of music.

 

She was preceded in death by a sister, Cassandra Owens.

HELEN NETHERY CADE, 97, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY

 

Helen Nethery Cade, 97, of Russell Springs, KY passed from this life on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at her home. She was born on June 20, 1923 in Spencer County, KY, second eldest of 7 children born to the late Chalmers and Elizabeth Stodghill Nethery.

 

Helen moved to Louisville at the age of 13. It was there she met Leon Cade, whom she married on January 20, 1940. Together, they shared 58 years of wedded bliss. During that time, Helen and Leon moved back to Russell County in 1964 and founded the Avalon Restaurant and Motel and the Exon Service Station, which they operated until 1979. They also operated the Russell County Airport for 5 years. Helen worked for the Lake Cumberland Community Services Organization as head cook and kitchen manager for over 25 years. She retired on February 29, 2002, but after a few years, she began employment with the Experience Works Program. After 8 years, she retired again at the age of 90.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her dear husband, Leon Cade, who passed from this life on March 14, 1998; an infant daughter, Mary Leona Cade; a son, Richard Leon Cade; 2 sisters: Betty Jean Nethery and Doris Johnson; and 2 brothers: Wendell Nethery and Kennard Nethery.

Roberta Marie Callahan, 88, of Demossville, KY died Saturday, May 15, 2021 at the Hospice of Hope Facility in Maysville, KY. She was born on June 10, 1932 to the late James Clyde and Mary Gwendolyn Simmons Cooley. 

 

She was the wife of the late Howard Mitchell Callahan.

 

Mrs. Callahan was of the Christian faith and a former member of the Pendleton County Athletic Boosters, Pendleton County School Board, Kentucky Democratic Women’s Club and Kentucky Chapter of DAR.

DONNA LOUISE BURRIS, 86, CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY (ADAIR CO. NATIVE)

 

Donna Louise Burris, 86, the daughter of the later Wilburn and Lucille (Breeding) Hamilton, was born August 14, 1934 in Adair County, KY and departed this life on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at Taylor Regional Hospital. 

 

She had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Bible Baptist Tabernacle and a homemaker. Donna enjoyed eating out, riding around seeing the beauty of nature and spending time with family.

 

She united marriage to Jim Garnett Burris, who preceded him in death in 2018.

Kenneth Holmes, 73, of Russell Springs, KY died Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at his residence. He was born on August 16, 1947 in Vester, KY to the late Willie and Rena Burton Holmes. 

 

Kenneth loved spending time with his family and friends.

 

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Connie Paulene Franklin Holmes and 6 siblings: Ramona Lane, Iola Holmes, Gwendola Holmes, Nola Vena Crawhorn, Ronald Holmes and Donald Holmes.

Mary Odean Loy, 84 of Columbia, KY passed away on Monday, May 17, 2021 after a brief illness. Odean was born on December 25, 1936 in Fairplay, KY to the late Vanus and Josephine Gadberry Sharp.
 

She was a longtime employee of the Adair County Board of Education and was a member of the Democrat Women’s Club.

Mimi (Rosemarie) Bairstow, 87, of Glensfork, KY, formerly of Chicago, IL, passed away suddenly May 13, 2021 due to accidental injuries. 

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry Bairstow Jr and Rosemarie (Horky) Bairstow; a sister, Nancy (Roger) Blackport; and a brother, Harry “Budd” (Joan) Bairstow III.

Her adoring nephews & nieces: Greg (Stephanie) Blackport, Bob (Katie) Blackport, Mike Blackport of whom she was like a mother to, Jeff (Katie) Bairstow, Susan (Roger) Hebden, Laura (Trey) Smith, Cynthia (Paul) Lappas

 

Mimi was a graduate of New Trier High School and Michigan State University. She was an Accountant for Morton Salt in Chicago, for a short time worked part-time for her dear lifelong friend Robert Smith before retiring to Kentucky where she enjoyed her farm, gardening and many animals. Mimi was extremely friendly, outgoing and strong willed. Her wit, energy, listening skills and smile made her memorable and an inspiration too many. In addition to her many hobbies and clubs she participated in, she also volunteered at the Adair County Food Pantry. She will be dearly missed by many friends.

 

Her out of state family is incredibly appreciative of her friends in Kentucky who have helped her and her animals through the years. 

 

Cremation has taken place through Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home of Columbia, KY with a family celebration of life to be held at a later date in Chicago.

 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Adair County Food Pantry or to the Green River Animal Shelter.

Jenna Rose Sawyer Hansford Ferguson, 81, of Campbellsville, KY died May 17, 2021 at her residence.  She was born on October 8, 1939 in Albany, KY to the late Jesse and Ann Grider Sawyers. 

 

She was the wife of the late Laine Ferguson.

 

Mrs. Ferguson was a member of the Beech Grove Baptist Church in Campbellsville and enjoyed cooking, playing the piano and caring for others.

Charles B. “Bud” Smith, Jr., 73, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Monday, May 17, 2021 at his home. Born at home in Russell Springs on October 24, 1947, he was the son of the late Charles Bascum and Afteel Meece Smith.  
 
Bud has cattle farmed all his life. He was from a family of Angus breeders. He was a member of the American Angus Association and the Kentucky Angus Association. Bud was also a member of Russell Springs First Baptist Church. He had a great love for God, his family and Angus cattle.
 
Along with his parents, Bud was preceded in death by his first wife, Donna Gosser Smith; 2 grandchildren: Steven Dick and Sarah Dick; a step-daughter, Lindsey Akers; and a brother-in-law, Limon Harris.

Bessie Jewell Dile, 81, of Columbia, KY died Sunday, May 16, 2021 at the TJ Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow, KY. She was born May 22, 1939 in Casey County, KY to the late Cash and Myrtle Smith Browning. 
 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the following siblings: Earl, Ed, Harvey, Bill and Donald Browning, Rebecca Brown, Tina Roberts and a sister in infancy.

 

Bessie was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, going to auctions and watching auctions online. In her earlier days, she loved to dance, play bingo, plant flowers, garden and can tomatoes.

Marlene Rodgers Tucker, 73, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Friday, May 14, 2021 at her home. She was born September 29, 1947 in Danville, KY, the only child born to the late Ora and Jessie Henson Rodgers.  

 

In addition to her parents, Marlene was also preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Bro. Elvis Tucker, who passed away January 27, 2017. As a pastor's wife, Marlene was the perfect help mate to Bro. Elvis, working side by side on the family farm. 

 

Marlene was a homemaker who loved to travel. She was also a member of Pine Grove Separate Baptist Church.

Quenton Truett Stephens, 75, of Jamestown, KY died Thursday, May 13, 2021 at Fair Oaks Nursing Home in Jamestown. Born on July 15, 1945 in Russell Springs, KY, he was a son of the late George and Fairlee Hopper Stephens. 

 

Quenton was a logger and a farmer for most of his life. He truly enjoyed working. Quenton was a very loving person. He liked to collect guns and Case knives. Quenton attended Solid Rock Full Gospel Church.

 

In addition to his parents, Quenton was preceded in death by 6 brothers: Ralph Stephens, Paul Stephens, Genis Stephens, John Stephens, Homer Stephens, and Glen Stephens; 2 sisters: Dorothy Stephens and Clydene George; and 2 grandchildren: Stephanie Burton and Cody Burton.

Mr. Catron was a member of Purdy Separate Baptist Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, vegetable gardening and spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid University of Kentucky Basketball fan.

Willard Morris Coomer, 75, of Columbia, KY died Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at the T.J. Samson Shanti Niketan Hospice Home in Glasgow after an extended illness. Born January 30, 1946 in Adair County, KY, Willard was the son of the late Azro and Christine Coomer.

 

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Harris Coomer in 2014 and a brother, Harold Coomer in 2018.

 

Willard was a long-time farmer in the Egypt community and a member of the Columbia United Methodist Church. He was an avid fisherman, wood craftsman and beekeeper.

Joyce C. Ford Wilson, 74, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Monday, May 10, 2021 at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset, KY. Born on August 17, 1946 in Somerset, she was the daughter of the late Henry Ford and Dalphia Roark Ford Burchett. 

 

Joyce worked for many years at Russell Sportswear and Fruit of the Loom. She was a devout Christian who served the Lord all of her life.

Donald Allen Bray, 47, the son of the late Peggy Sue Bray, was born February 3, 1974 in Jefferson County, KY and departed this life on Monday, May 10, 2021 in Greensburg at Jane Todd Hospital.
 
From birth, Mr. Bray knew love - and how to return it. He had a big heart and loved his family with everything in it. He was a huge fan of country music; he knew the chords and notes of countless songs and was a talented vocalist. His family speaks fondly of memories created with him that will live on for years to come.

MARY FRANCIS MAY, 94, ATLANTA, GA (FORMERLY OF COLUMBIA, KY)

 

On Monday, May 10, 2021, Mary Frances May passed away peacefully at the age of 94 in Atlanta, Georgia. She was born December 27, 1926 in Campbellsville, KY to the late Walter and Nina Yarberry Edwards. 

 

Mary attended Columbia High School and Lindsey Wilson College. While at Lindsey Wilson, she met Darrell May and they were wed on June 14, 1946. Darrell and Mary moved to Chattanooga, TN and this is where Mary found her love for china and crystal while employed by Fischer-Evans Jewelry. They belonged to Brainerd Baptist Church at the time. Darrell’s job took them to New Orleans, LA. Her love for New Orleans was a very special time in her life. She loved to take the streetcar to work at Adler’s Jewelry Store where she worked until retirement. They attended First Baptist Church of New Orleans.

 

Mary retired to Columbia, KY on her family farm. Darrell and Mary lived with her sister, Emily Cain. Mary and Emily were soon known in town as “The Sisters”. There was not a function in the area they missed! Mary was very active in her community being a member of Columbia Baptist Church, WMU and the Women’s Club. She was on the Board of Trustees at Campbellsville University for years. Mary had a love for the Lord, gardening, knitting, exercising and cooking.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell; a son, Dusty; and her sister, Emily.

Billie Ann Hadley, 63, of Columbia, KY died Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at her residence. She was born in Nottingham Park, IL on August 8, 1957 to the late William Preston Churchill and Dorothy Glinzig Churchill Svorc. 

 

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a son, Willie Hadley.

 

Mrs. Hadley formerly attended the Grace Lutheran Church in Willow Springs, IL and was an employee of the Russell County Hospital.  Billie enjoyed flower gardening and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Christy Gail Jolly, 42, the daughter of James Edward and Brenda Gail (Swanson) Flatt of Columbia, KY was born July 1, 1978 in Seymour, Indiana and departed this life on Saturday, May 8, 2021 in Campbellsville at her home after a battle with cancer. 

 

Christy enjoyed shopping, music, hunting for mushrooms (dryland fish) and spending time with her kids. She was of the Christian Faith.

Gregory "Greg" D. Claywell, 56, of Loves Park, IL (formerly of Adair County, KY) passed away Thursday, May 6, 2021 at Swedish American Hospital. He was born on October 6, 1964 in Berwyn, the son of Floyd and Flora (Loy) Claywell.  
 
Greg married Karen White on August 2, 2002 and was employed by Crown Lift Truck for many years. Greg loved riding his motorcycle, listening to music, attending car shows, and enjoying a cold beer. He had a great sense of humor and was known as a jokester. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.  
 
In addition to his father, Floyd, he was also preceded in death by his grandparents: Owen and Lorrine Claywell and Gilliam and Alice Loy, and several close friends.

Larry Bunch, 72, of Russell Springs, KY passed away with his family at his bedside on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset, KY.  
 
Born on June 6, 1948, in Russell County, he was a son of the late Robert and Jewell Hill Bunch.  Larry worked as a farm hand most of his life, but also worked at Stephen’s Pipe and Steel for over 20 years. Larry was a former constable for Russell County. He loved to deer hunt and fish. 
 
In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by a sister, Jerry Stephens.

ROBERT "ROB" BEASLEY, 56, RUSSELLVILLE, KY

 

Robert “Rob” Beasley, 56, of Russellville, KY passed away Saturday, May 1, 2021 at the Medical Center in Bowling Green. He was born September 28, 1964 in Leitchfield, KY. 

 

From childhood he had a passion for music and began developing his performance skills on multiple instruments. At age 15, he began working in the radio industry. Much of his career was spent as a radio personality under the moniker of Maxwell “Max” P. Murphy, and his energetic, booming voice filled the airwaves throughout South Central Kentucky. During the latter years of his career, he served as a broadcast engineer for The Edge Media Group.

 

Rob was a member of Southern Heights Baptist Church, Russellville where he served as a musician and sound technician. Prior to his service at Southern Heights, he spent many years as a praise band member at Living Hope Baptist Church, Bowling Green, Ky playing saxophone and guitar. Rob was also known for his enthusiasm and humor as a popular announcer for several Kentucky marching band competitions and his devotion to helping the Logan County High School Band. He was loved by many for his big heart, quick wit, and servant spirit.

Billie Jo Miller Edwards, 91, of Columbia, KY gained her angel wings on Sunday, May 2, 2021 at her residence, with her family by her side. She was born in Columbia, KY on January 31, 1930 to the late Anna Lewis Harper and Otha Butler Miller. 
 

She was the wife of the late Hubert Wade Edwards.

 

Mrs. Edwards was a member of the Egypt Christian Church and a former clerk at Marshall’s Shoe Store.  She was known to many as “Mamaw” and loved spending time with her family and friends.

Jessie Elbert Hagan, 75, of Columbia, KY died Friday, April 30, 2021 at his residence with his family by his side. He was born in Columbia, KY on November 1, 1945 to the late Clyde E. and Erie Ellen Tabor Hagan.

 

Jessie was a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church and was Chaplain of the Breeding Volunteer Fire Department. He was a farmer, Gas attendant at Lynn’s Service Center and Gate Worker at Bluegrass Stockyards. He loved going to church, mowing his yard and spending time with his family and friends.
