Vickie Lynn Johnson, 71, of Columbia, KY passed away Saturday, August 31, 2024 at the Medical Center at Bowling Green. She was born on March 20, 1953 in Jamestown, KY to the late Loren and Clara Edmonds Wesley.

 

Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Jamestown Christian Church and enjoyed Cooking and spending time with her family and friends, especially her dog “Daisy Mae”.

Ruby Chrystine Knauer, 89, of Louisville, KY and formerly of Columbia, KY passed away Friday, August 30, 2024 at Westport Place Health Campus in Louisville,. She was born in Columbia, KY on September 4, 1934 to the late George Hershel and Sallie Martha Cheatham Powell.

 

She was also preceded in death by her husbands: Everett Inlow Knauer and Charles Edward Overcash, Sr.

 

Mrs. Knauer was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed shopping, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren.

Dolene Hoover, 95, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Friday evening, August 30, 2024 at Fair Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility in Jamestown, KY. She was born April 15, 1929 at home in Adair County, a daughter of the late John Tyler and Nettie Grider Atchley. 
 

Ms. Hoover married William “Oscar” Hoover on October 27, 1947. Two sons were born to their union.

 

Ms. Dolene was a member of Bethlehem Separate Baptist Church.  She was a homemaker who loved to cook.

Freda Whittle, 59, of Russell Springs, KY departed this life on Thursday, August 22, 2024 at UK Bluegrass Hospice Care Center in Lexington. She was born on April 7, 1965 in Detroit, Michigan, a daughter of the late Fred Graves and Agnes Couch Kovacs.

 

Freda was employed as a horse groomer, specializing in mane pulling, at various local horse farms. She had a deep passion for rebuilding and repairing her own vehicles. With a particular affinity for classic cars, she often participated in car shows. Freda enjoyed karaoke and moments spent by the creek with her three beloved fur babies and her partner of 26 years, Christopher Whalen.

Mr. Womack served in the U.S. Air Force in the Korean War and was a retired truck driver.

Jimmy L. Matney, 69, Russell Springs, KY

 
Jimmy L. Matney, 69, of Russell Springs, KY passed from this life on Tuesday evening, August 27, 2024 at his home, with his family at his side. He was born in Adair County, on June 11, 1955, one of four sons born to the union of the late Hollan and Lyda Corbin Matney. 
 
He was a faithful member of the Church at the Springs. Jimmy began his career at Bernard Funeral Home in 1992, became a Kentucky licensed Funeral Director on January 9, 1997, and later achieved co-ownership of the funeral home. Throughout his years of selfless service, Jimmy served a countless number of families during their time of loss. To know him was to love him. Jimmy was a true gentleman; he was a kind and selfless person who would go above and beyond for his family and friends, never seeking recognition or praise for himself.  
 
Jimmy was an avid Louisville Cardinal fan, and enjoyed being outside, mowing his yard, gardening, and fishing. Most of all, Jimmy took the role of being the ultimate provider, husband, dad, and pa for his family the sole mission in his life. He will be missed by all who knew him.

She attended Clear Springs Baptist Church, was a homemaker, and in her spare time enjoyed quilting, reading, and doing word search puzzles.

David Milby, 69, of Summersville, KY (formerly of Knoxville, Tennessee), son of the late James Roy Milby and Lillian Warren Milby, was born on June 9, 1955 in Taylor County, KY and departed this life on Thursday, June 20, 2024 at Hospice House in Glasgow. 
 
He had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Olivet Baptist Church in Powell, Tennessee. He was a National Gas consultant and was owner and operator of CH4 Concepts. Mr. Milby was also a Kentucky Colonel.

Sandra “Sandy” Kimbler, 72, of Columbia, KY passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at her home. She was born August 15, 1952, in Adair County to the late Coakley Matney and Lillie “Polly” Banks.

 

She was a member of Campbellsville Baptist Temple in Campbellsville, KY. Sandy was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ, whose faith guided her throughout her life. She was a loving mother to her two sons and Grammy to her four granddaughters. She affectionately referred to her grandchildren as her “angel girls.” Her greatest blessing was her family; she often spoke of how blessed she was to have lifelong friends who enriched her life with so much love and support. She enjoyed spending time with all of her loved ones, creating the most special memories to be cherished forever. Despite the years of living in pain due to rheumatoid arthritis, she carried herself gracefully. She was a strong-willed and kind-hearted woman, always putting the needs of others before herself. She was known for her compassionate nature and witty sense of humor. Sandy will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

James "Ron" Sexton, 80, Louisville, KY (Adair County Native)

 

James "Ron" Sexton, 80, of Louisville, KY died Saturday, August 17, 2024 at the Norton Women & Children's Hospital in Louisville. He was born on October 21, 1943 in Gradyville, KY, a son of the late Ruby and Orval Sexton.

 

Ron was a graduate of Adair County high school. He lived a full and vibrant life, marked by his deep love for family, dedication to his community, and diverse interests. Ron proudly served in the United States Air Force as an Airman Second Class for six years. Following his military service, he embarked on a successful career at General Electric, where he worked for 25 years. In the last 8 years of his tenure, Ron held a management position, demonstrating his leadership and commitment to excellence in the workplace.

 

Ron was preceded in death by his beloved wife Margaret, with whom he shared 43 wonderful years; a sister, Janice Butler; and a nephew, Eric Butler.

 

Ron was a devoted Past Master, 33rd degree, of the Masonic fraternity, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to its principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth. He was also an avid reader, with a particular fondness for the works of Louis L'Amour, Alistair MacLean, and Dean Koontz.  An avid outdoorsman, Ron enjoyed hunting and fishing, finding joy and solace in nature. He was a passionate fan of Kentucky Wildcats basketball, rarely missing a game. In his quieter moments, Ron enjoyed challenging himself with crossword puzzles and trivia, always eager to test his knowledge and skill and learn.

George D. Pitzer, 95, of Columbia, KY died Sunday, August 18, 2024 at 2:10 A.M. at his residence. He was born January 19, 1929 in Moatsville, West Virginia to the late Roy Lee and Mary Pearl Scott Pitzer. 
 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Natalie Waugh Pitzer in 2016. 
 

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, was a maintenance worker for the Corps of Engineers and attended Melson Ridge United Baptist Church.

Frances Akin, 91, of Columbia, KY passed away Saturday, August 17, 2024 at Summit Manor Nursing Home in Columbia. She was born in Springfield, IL on February 12, 1933 to the late Clayton and Evelyn Reliford Keltner.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Theron Akin; a son, Stephen D. Paul; and two siblings: Johnny Wayne Keltner and Dixie Lee Wright.

 

Mrs. Akin was a member of the Trinity Church and enjoyed crocheting, playing the piano and most of all babysitting many children that she considered her own grandchildren.

Barbara Jo Rayburn, 80, of Columbia, KY passed away Monday, August 19, 2024 at Campbellsville Nursing and Rehabilitation in Campbellsville, KY. She was born June 1, 1944 in Springfield, KY to the late Shreve and Louise Burris Dile.

 

Barbara married Robert Houston “Bobby” Rayburn on June 28, 1969 who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by two siblings: Kenneth Dile and Sharon Cates (& husband Kenneth Cates); a sister-in-law, Judy Dile; and a brother-in-law, J.R. Simpson.

 

Mrs. Rayburn was of the Christian faith and an avid Elvis fan. She enjoyed gardening, canning, cross stitching, collecting glassware and word find games. Barbara Jo was a gentle, sweet, kind loving and nurturing lady.

Command Sergeant Major Olbie Giftel Foley, 90, of Russell Springs, KY passed away, Saturday, August 17, 2024 at his residence. He was born February 7, 1934 in Russell County, a son of the late Loren and Flossie Wilson Foley. 

 

Olbie was a US Army Veteran, serving in Vietnam and earning a Bronze Star and Combat Medic Badge. He proudly served his country for over 30 years.

Our Lord and Savior has called home Vermalene Grider Moore, affectionately known throughout her life as “Sugar”. 
 

Sugar was known for not only her beauty, but also her loving and kind heart. She had an infectious laugh and loved people. She loved her children, grandchildren, family members and friends. She was an excellent cook and often carried a home cooked meal to the sick and elderly.

 

She had a creative and artistic flair that showed in her home décor, crocheting and baking. She worked at various factories throughout her lifetime and earned her nursing degree while working at Union Underwear. She later gave up her nursing career to be available to help care for her grandsons.  She was so proud of her grandsons and her devotion to them was evident. She loved talking about them to everyone she met. She liked nothing more than spending her free time at Moore’s Pool Room with the Moore family as they held a special place in her heart. Before her long and debilitating illness, she was often found helping serve customers, picking at friends and family and joyfully laughing at the jokes and tall tales bring shared there. She was a loving mother, Nina, sister and friend.


She was born January 11, 1963 and departed her earthly journey on August 19, 2024 at the age of 61. Her parents, James Grider and Allene Kerns Burton preceded her in death as well as an infant sibling and two nephews.

Gary Lee “GJ” Jasper, 68, of Jamestown, KY passed away on Friday, August 16, 2024 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset, KY. He was born on November 27, 1955 in Indianapolis, Indiana, a son of the late Ora and Norma Shepherd Jasper.
 

Gary was a former employee of B&H Auto Parts and later retired from the State Highway Department. He was a member of Creelsboro Christian Church. GJ loved being outdoors, riding his horses, and hosting gatherings at “the barn” near the river in Creelsboro.

JoAnn Skipper, 81, of Jamestown, KY, passed away on Friday, August 16, 2024. She was born on November 6, 1942 in Hamilton, OH, a daughter of the late Jeff and Nancy Durbin.

 

JoAnn was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She dedicated her life to her family and her career as a registered nurse, proudly obtaining her nursing degree and caring for others throughout her life.


JoAnn enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including golf, cooking, gardening, and music ministry. She had a passion for Southern food and loved listening to the piano. In her leisure time, she also enjoyed bowling, playing cards, and participating in bingo games. JoAnn was a devoted fan of television shows like "Blue Bloods," "Big Brother," "Survivor," and "Alone", but her family was her greatest joy.

Carl “Whitey” Mings, 75, of Columbia, KY passed away peacefully on Friday, August 16, 2024 at Russell County Hospital. He was born at home on October 22, 1948 in Columbia, KY to the late Harlin and Tolou Mings. 
 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters: Russell and Kenneth Mings, Freda Stotts, Helen Bradley and Ruby Cave.

 

Carl served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, spending two years stationed in Germany.  Upon his return, he embarked on a successful career as a skilled mason for four decades where he was affectionately known as “Whitey” due to his light blond hair and fair complexion.  In his later years, Carl found joy on the open road driving a truck for Campbell’s Trucking and Gaskin’s Fertilizer, always accompanied by his loyal companion, Harley Pup.

 

An avid outdoorsman, Carl found solace in tending to his garden and casting a line in the water.  He possessed a natural ability to make everyone feel at ease and his quick wit brought laughter to those closest to him.  A devout member of Calvary Temple Church in the Garlin community, Carl cherished his faith and the bonds he shared with his church family.

Robert Rudy Hubbard, 75, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Friday, August 16, 2024 at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset, KY. He was born September 2, 1948 in Cincinnati, Ohio, a son of the late Rudolph and Virginia Ashcraft Hubbard. 

 

Robert was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force. He retired as a Captain after serving 22 years as a military police officer. Robert was then employed by the Nevada Department of Public Safety where he worked as a state police officer for 16 years. After retirement, he enjoyed spending his free time playing golf. To his family and friends he was considered a “great man” and will be dearly missed.

Elmer was a retired master welder from the old L&N Railroad in Louisville. It was known that he could weld anything other than the crack of dawn or a broken heart.

Eldridge was a lifetime member and a 50 year plus Deacon at Jamestown First Baptist Church. He worked for Irby Construction Company for 9 years installing electrical transmission lines throughout the United States. In 1965, he began his 30 plus year career with Kentucky Utilities as a lineman.

Ivan Tucker, 86, of Russell County, KY passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at Fair Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation in Jamestown, KY where he had been a resident for the last two years. He was born in the Parks Ridge community of Russell County on June 13, 1938 to Vernada Foster and Elijah “Giddy” Tucker. 
 
He worked for the Formica Corporation of Cincinnati, Ohio until he was forced to retire due to illness. Ivan was a fiercely independent and a very private person who kept to himself. He was a man of extreme contrast, in that he could be stern and hard, or easy-going and compassionate toward a friend. He had an iron will and an absolute commitment to attaining his goals in life!
 
He was a keen observer of people, events and things- and could sum up his thoughts about each with just a few words, if asked!  Ivan enjoyed Elvis Presley music, liked fast cars and talking with friends while sitting in the shade, and drinking coffee. He enjoyed the attention of the staff at Fair Oaks, who called him “Smiley” and gave him good care while he was there! Ivan professed Jesus as his Savior.

Joseph Lee Pyles, 81, of Columbia, KY passed away Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at T.J. Health Columbia surrounded by his family. He was born in Adair County on January 6, 1943 to the late Finis and Marie Burton Pyles.
 
Joe was a 1961 graduate of Adair County High School and later Campbellsville College with a bachelor’s degree in education. He worked as a teacher at both Cane Valley and Shepherd schools in Adair County where he also served as basketball coach. He later left education to pursue his dreams of founding his own business which evolved into the diversified establishment known as Pyles Brick & Block, which he co-owned and operated with his late wife, Annabelle. 
 
He was a charter member of Trinity Church where he remained a member and benefactor. One of his proudest professional accomplishments was working with other area businessmen to start and begin the financial institution of United Citizens Bank of Southern Kentucky. He continued to serve on the board of directors and Chair of the Loan Committee until a week prior to his passing. His greatest source of joy in life besides cutting a deal, was from his beloved family - and the successful lives of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. To the community, he was known as "The Brick Man", to his family, he was “Papa Joe”.

Marcia Anne Shuffett, 72, of Columbia, KY, daughter of the late David McDonald and Marian Ashley McDonald, was born on August 12, 1952 in Tennessee and passed away on Monday, August 12, 2024 at T.J. Samson Hospital. 

 

Marcia had made a profession of faith in Christ, was the founder of Shuffett’s Daycare in Edmonton, and worked as a dental hygienist.

 

She was united in marriage to Robert Gail Shuffett in August 1989, who preceded her in death on May 27, 2020.

Reba F. Smith, 90, of Jamestown, KY passed from this life on Sunday, August 11, 2024 at the Jean Waddle Hospice Care Center in Somerset. She was born in Russell County, KY on Saturday, March 3, 1934, a daughter of the late Omra and Lyda Gaye Pierce Holt. 

 

Ms. Reba was a member of the Mt. Hope Separate Baptist Church. She was “everybody’s Granny” and was a devout caregiver to everyone she loved. Ms. Reba was “everybody’s Sweetheart” as well; always having a smile on her face and always cutting up.  She enjoyed playing Rook and Uno, working puzzles and did her share of “messing and gomming around”.  Ms. Reba was simply just a “Good Ole Gal”.

 

She married Harold Smith on June 12, 1954 and he preceded her in death on August 27, 2004. She was also preceded in death by her sons-in-law: Donnie Coffey and Limmy McGowan; her brothers: James Earl Holt and William Carl Holt; her sister, Irene Selby; her grandson, Christopher Glenn Coffey; and her great-grandson, Eason Thomas Popplewell.

Ralph Grider, 78, of the Millerfield community of Adair County, KY passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2024. He was born in Adair County on June 13, 1946, the son of the late Joe and Alta Etta Stargel Grider.

 

Ralph was a farmer and a proud US Army veteran. He was an avid hunter and thoroughly enjoyed being outdoors. Ralph loved to farm and graciously mowed the Millerfield Cemetery for over 20 years. In his pastime, he enjoyed going to church and spending time with his family and friends. You would often find him watching his westerns, reading or doing his word search puzzles, as well as watching U of L college basketball games. Ralph will be sorely missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

After high school, Linda attended Lindsey Wilson College and Western Kentucky University. She had many jobs throughout her life: bank teller, manager of KFC, and Goody’s department store. She was very passionate about animals and frequently volunteered at New Hope Animal Rescue Center. Linda was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and a Kentucky Colonel.

Michael Lynn Selby, 77, of Russell Springs, KY passed from this life on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at the UK Medical Center in Lexington.  He was born on Tuesday, March 18, 1947 in Russell County, the only child born to the union of the late Curtis Ray and Mary Louise Hale Selby.  
 
Michael obtained his master’s degree in education from Eastern Kentucky University and taught for a few years in the Adair County School System. He was a retired auditor with the Lake Cumberland Area Development District and a member of Russell Springs First United Methodist Church. He was a quiet man, who was content just to sit back and let others talk and was well liked by all who knew him. Michael enjoyed reading, landscaping and gardening, and his animals.

Calvin Theodore “Ted” Johnson, 58, of Tompkinsville, KY passed from this life to his eternal home on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at the Monroe County Medical Center after a long illness, with Lea Ann, his wife of 22 years by his side.  He was born on September 15, 1965 in Louisville, KY, the first-born child of William Robert and Jean Grider Johnson.  
 
Growing up in Russell County, Ted loved to go fishing. He was a member of The Springs Church in Russell Springs when he heard his call to preach. At the time of his passing, he had ministered for over 28 years, currently serving at the Tompkinsville First United Methodist Church and at Gamaliel United Methodist Church.
 
Ted had previously worked for H & R Block and as a wastewater tech for the city of Jamestown.

Daniel Stephen “Danny” Feese, 72, of Columbia, KY passed away Sunday, August 4, 2024 at Baptist Health in Lexington, KY. He was born in Columbia, KY on March 4, 1952 to the late Joseph Estill and Eltha Sinclair Feese.

 

Danny attended Plum Point Baptist Church as a child and has attended Bearwallow Church where he has served as song leader & guitar player for several years. Danny was an avid reader and frequented the Adair County Public Library and Genealogy Center weekly. He founded the 7-8-9-10 Feese Family Gospel Group consisting of himself and three of his siblings, where he loved to sing and play the guitar. He had a special love of singing with children which started with his daughters. He loved his daughters and was excitedly awaiting the arrival of his first grandchild.

 

Danny was a Navy Veteran and enjoyed fishing and relaxing on Green River Lake and going on evening Jeep rides. He always enjoyed a good conversation with anyone about history, music, gardening, basketball, or any random topic.

 

He was also preceded in death by two siblings: Bobby Feese and Sue Feese.

Catherine Brock Hutchison, 92, Columbia, KY


Catherine Brock Hutchison, 92, of Columbia, KY passed away on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at TriStar Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, TN. She was born on April 10, 1932, in Leslie County, KY to the late Will and Rose Caldwell Brock.

 

She was a member of the Columbia United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women for many years, as well as she Chaired one of the Mary Martha Ministries. She loved her God, church, family, neighbors and friends. She loved her Sunday School Class and enjoyed studying the Bible. She was a member of the Club 92 Homemakers and enjoyed reading a good novel and watching sports for pastime. She graduated from Lindsey Wilson College in 1954 and finished her college at Eastern State College (EKU). She taught school for 36 years in the Adair County School System.

 

She married Clyde Hutchison on May 28, 1954 and he preceded her in death on December 13, 2011.

 

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Wallace Brock and a sister, Coreen Hayward.

David Schoenberger, 88, Campbellsville, KY

 

David Schoenberger, 88, of Campbellsville, KY, son of the late Donald Louis Schoenberger and Mary Waters Brown, was born January 4, 1936 in Los Angeles, California and departed this life on Friday, August 2, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.

 

David united in marriage to Ms. Shirley Mae Heughins and they raised three children together. She preceded him in death. He later united in marriage to Ms. Clara Ellis-Durham in April 2014 where his family grew by many.

 

David served his country proudly in the United States Navy for 20 years and fought in the Vietnam War. David professed faith in Christ and attended St. Andrews Methodist Church.

Stella Grace LaForge, 79, was born May 27, 1945 in Toledo, Ohio to the late Ralph F. Miller and Betty F. Kleeberger Miller. She departed this life on Thursday, August 1, 2024 at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, KY.

 

Ms. Stella was of the Baptist faith and was a homemaker.

 

Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, David A. LaForge and two grandchildren: Dominique LaForge and Melissa LaForge.

Patrick Reid Loveless, 52, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Thursday, August 1, 2024 at his home. He was born July 19, 1972 in Somerset, KY, a son of the late Frank and Brenda Wilson Loveless. 

 

He was the proud father of Braxton, who was Patrick’s world. Patrick was a long-time employee of Bennett’s Carpets. He enjoyed UK basketball, going fishing, watching movies and collecting sports cards. Patrick loved to take Braxton to play ball and was a coach to many of his son’s teams.

Sandra Dean Burbridge Williams, 61, of Campbellsville, KY, daughter of the late Robert Wallace Wheat Jr. and Johnnie Mae Burbridge, was born November 12, 1962 in Columbia, KY and departed this life on Monday, July 29, 2024 at her home, surrounded by her family.  

 

She united in marriage to James David Williams on May 12, 2018.

 

Sandy worked at First & Farmer’s National Bank in Columbia, KY for 23 years as a teller and was promoted to head teller, which made her the first black head teller at First & Farmer’s National Bank. She also worked as OshKosh B‘gosh and Fruit of the Loom. Sandy recently became a board member of Homeplace on Green River. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family. Sandy served as a member and usher at Pleasant Union Baptist Church; She loved her church family.

Ivodean R. Bernard, 84, of Russell Springs, KY passed from this life on Friday, August 2, 2024 at Fair Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation in Jamestown, KY. She was born in Dunnville, on May 14, 1940, a daughter of the late Oliver Cromwell and Tamzy Louisa Whitehead Rodgers.  
 
She was a hard-working lady who spent years working full time at the sewing factory or as a cook for the Russell County Board of Education, before coming home to work on her family’s farm. Ms. Ivodean was a member of the Willow Oak Church of Christ. She enjoyed gardening and working in her flowers; she loved to spend any spare time sewing and painting.

Stephen Lee Thomas, 73, of Jamestown, KY passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at his home. He was born on August 11, 1950 in Somerset, a son of the late Delmas Lee and Wilma Blair Thomas.

 

Stephen was a retired Recreation Director for Lake Cumberland State Park and a member of Jamestown First Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting and was a true outdoorsman. Stephen dearly loved his family and friends, and his dog, Riley.
