JAMES ALLEN MORGAN, 79, JAMESTOWN, KY

 
James Allen Morgan, 79, of Jamestown, KY passed away on Thursday, April 29th, 2021 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset. He was born at home, in Jamestown, on March 29, 1942, one of ten children born to the late Everett and Valara Melson Morgan.  
 
James worked the family farm every day of his life, leaving the Sabbath day for rest and milking only. He was a man of simple ways, finding peace in sitting on his porch with a chew of tobacco and something to whittle in hand.
 
Along with his parents, Mr. Morgan was preceded in death by his siblings: Calvin Morgan, William Morgan, Thomas Eugene Morgan, Paul Morgan, Edwin Morgan and Marie Hadley.

BESSIE LOUISE WITHERS, 75, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY

 

Bessie Louise Withers, 75, of Russell Springs, KY passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, April 29, 2021. Born October 12, 1945 in Louisville, KY, she was a daughter of the late Mackie and Louise Howard Huddleston. 

 

Bessie was a homemaker and attended Bernard Ridge Church of God. She was a loving mom and grandmother. She was known by everyone as “Granny.”

3 brothers, Norman Huddleston, Stan Huddleston, and Wayne Huddleston

In addition to her parents, Bessie was preceded in death her husband, Charles Withers, who passed away January 17, 2002; and a brother, Charles Huddleston.

 

Graveside services will be held for family only. Burial will be in Bernard Ridge Cemetery.

BOBBY CALDWELL, 93, COLUMBIA, KY

 

Bobby Caldwell, 93, of Columbia, KY died Thursday, April 29, 2021 at Summit Manor Nursing Home. He was born July 1, 1927 in Adair County, KY to the late Robert and Rachel Coffey Caldwell. 

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandchild, Robert Christopher Caldwell; a brother, David Caldwell; and a sister, Jennie Lee Caldwell.

 

Bobby was a member of Columbia Christian Church, a US Army Veteran, retired from the U.S. Postal Service after nearly 30 years of service and worked at Adair Farmers Service when he finished with his daily mail route.  At the age of 18, he “legally” became a firefighter with the Columbia Fire Department and was instrumental in seeing the need for fire protection outside the city limits, so the Adair County Volunteer Fire Department was created in 1954. Bobby served as Chief and President of the county department for many years.  At the time of his death, he had served on the fire department for 75 years.

Dorothy Pennington, 88, of Breeding, KY passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at her home. She was born on January 26, 1933 in Cumberland County, KY to the late Walter and Mary Pierce Davidson.

 

Dorothy had attended Pittman Creek Holiness Church, was a former seamstress for several area sewing factories and was a homemaker.

Mary Bender, 58, of Russell Springs, KY passed away suddenly on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at her home. She was born to Helena and Joseph Walker on November 12, 1962 in Cobleskill, New York.
 
Mary will be remembered for her way to make everyone feel like her family and for her love of singing, even if she didn’t know all the words. She would always give someone the benefit of doubt and go above and beyond for everyone she met. Mary will be greatly missed.
 

She was predeceased by her son, David Walker; and her grandchildren, Alex Van Valkenburgh Walker and Claire Duncan.

Forest C. Gibson, 92, of Oaklawn, IL passed away on October 31, 2020. Forest was born to Claude and Hannah Gibson on September 23, 1928. 

 

Forest retired from running his own Barber Shop for 30 years. He spent half his time in Ft. Myers Beach, FL and the rest in Illinois. Forest loved his family and friends.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 wives: Mayrene Sexton Gibson and Sylvia Kegney Gibson; 2 sons: Kenneth E. Gibson and John F. Gibson (Theresa); 2 sisters: Agnes (Gilliam) Lacy, Dorothy (Rondal) Clemmons; and 4 brothers: Wilbur (Lou Willie) Gibson, Albert (Mabel) Gibson, Robert (Virginia) Gibson and Charles (Shirley) Gibson.

On Friday March 19, 2021 Kenneth E Gibson “JD”, 66, of Venice, FL passed away. He was born on September 17, 1954 to Forest and Mayrene Gibson. 

 

Kenneth retired to Venice, FL in 2014 with his children and grandchildren. He worked as an auto body repair man and tile setter until he retired. Friend to many, loved by many.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John F Gibson.

Matthew Keith Chapman, 23, of Green County, KY, son of Bryan Chapman and Amy Bagby Chapman both of Green County, was born on Saturday, February 14, 1998 in Taylor County and departed this life on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at the Norton Hospital in Louisville, KY. 
 
He had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Trammell Creek Baptist Church. He was a 2017 graduate of the Green County High School, was a graduate of the fire science program, was a honorary member of the Greensburg/Green County Fire Department, and loved to hunt and fish.

Betty Jean Cash, 72, of Russell Springs, KY formerly of Milltown, died Thursday, April 22, 2021 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville. She was born January 7, 1949 in Adair County, KY to the late Herbert Ray and Mae Grant Collins. 

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Wilson, her son, Phil Hudson and her brother, Bobby Collins. 

 

Betty formerly work at Osh Kosh B’Gosh and The Country Inn and retired from working in the Cranmer Dining Center at Lindsey Wilson College.

Juanita Cox, 94, of Campbellsville, KY, daughter of the late Teve Goode and Rose Etta Rhodes Goode, was born August 6, 1926 in Taylor County, KY. She died at 7:16 A.M., Wednesday, April 21, 2021 in Campbellsville.   

 

She professed faith in Christ and attended East Campbellsville Church of God. Juanita was a retired employee of Fruit of the Loom in Campbellsville.

 

She united in marriage to Hubert Cox August 3, 1946 and he preceded her in death April 3, 1989.

Sandra Lee Shirley, 55, was born August 8, 1965 in Green County, KY to Eva Vibbert Robertson and the late Lemuel “Buck” Robertson. She departed this life Friday, April 16, 2021 at her home.

 

Sandra had made a profession of faith in Christ and was of the Baptist Faith. She was a Certified Nursing Assistant at Taylor Regional Hospital.  

 

Besides her father, she was preceded in death by one sister, Sharon Kay Robertson and a son-in-law, Anthony Wade Worner.

Alva Woods, 82, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Sunday, April 18, 2021 at his residence. He was born on Tuesday, January 24, 1939 in Pleasureville, KY, a son of the late James Curtis Woods and Rebecca Hudson Woods.
 
Mr. Woods was a veteran of the U.S. Marines and a facilities security officer for the Commonwealth of Kentucky attaining the rank of Captain. He was also a member of Coffey's Chapel United Methodist Church.
 
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons: Steve Bailey and Jimmy Gambill and a sister, Virginia Harrod.

Timmy Lynn “Honey Bun” Burton, 60, of Columbia, KY died Sunday, April 18, 2021 at his residence. He was born on March 29, 1961 in Columbia, KY to the late Fannie Ethel Sallee Miller (Dale Miller).

 

Mr. Burton was a member of 3 Trees Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing and trading on beagle dogs. His greatest love was spending time with his family and friends and looking for a great deal or as some would call “Junking”.

MAXENE BOTTOM CLAYTON, 90, LOUISVILLE, KY (RUSSELL COUNTY NATIVE)


Maxene Bottom Clayton, 90, passed away on Thursday, April 15, 2021 after a short illness. She was born on May 27, 1930 in Russell Springs, KY, one of eight children born to the late Homer and Edith Bottom. 
 

Though she resided in Louisville for 70 years, Russell Springs was still “home”. While she was a hair stylist in her younger years, most of her life was spent as a devoted homemaker. Maxene was a member of Parkland Baptist Church for 70 years.

 

Maxene was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Elwood Clayton; son-in-law, Bill Renders; mother-in-law, Lora Burton; a brother, Lyman Bottom; and sisters: Olena Akers, Betty Jane Foley and Carolyn Bottom.

Roscoe Franklin Beard, 83, was born July 3, 1937 in Harriman, Tennessee and departed this life on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 in Campbellsville at his home.

 

Roscoe was an employee of Walmart in Columbia and was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed fishing, watching football, taking care of his horses and watching western movies.

Glenn Phillips, 71, the son of the late Benjamin Irvin and Helen Bertha (Blackman) Phillips, was born August 14, 1949 in Lancaster, South Carolina. He departed this life on Thursday, April 15, 2021 in Columbia, KY at TJ Health Columbia. 

 

He was a retired Industrial Electrician. His work took him to several countries across Europe and Asia where he helped build and maintain power plants. After retiring, Glenn.. well, he simply enjoyed life. Woodworking, fishing, gun and knife collecting, and caring for his dogs were some of his favorite pastimes.

JAMES "J.C." MCFARLAND, 62, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY

 

James “J.C.” McFarland, 62, passed away on Thursday, April 15, 2021, at the Jean Waddle Hospice Care Center, in Somerset. Born on August 19, 1958 in Hammond, Indiana, he was the son of Chesley “Pete” and Lofie Gosser McFarland. 

 

J.C. grew up helping his father build barns.  He raised tobacco for many years.  J.C. was certified electrician.  Throughout his career, he worked at Fruit of the Loom, Superior Battery, and Tantus Tobacco and Stephens Pipe and Steel.  
 

J.C. was a jack of all trades who enjoyed tinkering and fixing things.  He loved spending time with his family and fishing, especially with his fishing buddy, Arielle.  He was a faithful member of Pine Grove United Baptist Church and enjoyed singing and picking the guitar.

ANTHONY "CRAIG" BYRD, 50, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY

 
Anthony “Craig” Byrd, 50, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. He was born on October 8, 1970 in Casey County, KY, the only child of Darrell Byrd and the late Linda Cochran Byrd.  
 
Craig was an over-the-road truck driver for Tom Cinnamon Trucking Company out of Lafollette, Tennessee. Craig married Julia Burton on October 19, 1991 at the State Park in Jamestown. He and Julia were always getting out and going places. They would take many motorcycle trips together on Craig’s Harley Davidson motorcycle. Craig loved his grandbabies and enjoyed taking them for rides on his dirt bike, go-kart and his side-by-side.
 
He was preceded in death is his mother, Linda Byrd; a daughter, Kendra Byrd, who passed away on May 7, 1994; and his paternal grandparents, Russell and Lillian Byrd, who raised him.

Debbie was a former school bus driver and bus driver instructor for Russell County Schools.  She loved being outside, doing yardwork and gardening.

Ruby Withers Story, 82, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at her home.  She was born December 23, 1938 in the Dorena community of Russell County, a daughter of the late Daniel Clayborn and Lila Foley Withers.  
 
Ruby last worked at Osh Kosh in Columbia. She and her husband, Bob, worked side by side for many years and ran several businesses together. Ruby was a member of the Russell Springs First Baptist Church. She loved people and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was “Mammy” to many and loved by all.
 
In addition to her parents, Ruby was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert E.“ Bob” Story; as well as several brothers and sisters.

TERRY LEE GOODIN, 65, COLUMBIA, KY

 

Terry Lee Goodin, 65, of Columbia, KY passed away on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at Russell County Hospital. Born on December 19, 1955 in Somerset, KY, he was the son of the late Elbert and Lois Holt Goodin. 

 

Terry married Kathy McKinley on October 19, 1974. He ministered for 38 years, pastoring churches in Russell, Pulaski, Casey and Adair Counties. He was a member of White’s Chapel Separate Baptist Church. For many years, Terry was the owner and operator of T. Goodin Fertilizer. He was a member of the Hood Masonic Lodge #839. Terry loved riding his Harley Davidson and loved the time spent with his grandchildren.

JOE STANLEY EPPERSON, JR., 73, ADAIR COUNTY, KY NATIVE

 
Joe Stanley Epperson, Jr., 73, a native of Columbia, KY and the eldest child of Joe Stanley Epperson, Sr. and Dorothy Garnett Epperson, passed away on Wednesday morning, March 10, 2021 while in the kind and compassionate care of the Palliative Care team at Baptist Hospital East in Louisville.
 
Joe was known as "Junior" from the time of his birth on September 30, 1947 in Columbia, KY. During his youth, he became a member of the First Baptist Church of Columbia. After his graduation from Adair County High School in 1965, he joined the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He served his country with dignity as evidenced by his honorable discharge upon completing his service requirements.
 
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his younger Epperson brothers: Frank Rodney in 1975, Henry Wayne "affectionately known as Mr. Bounce"  in 2013, and James Marshall "known first as Baby Brother, then Babe" passed away in 2016.
 
As Junior would say in his later years: "May God bless you and keep you in His good graces."

Jerry L. Jones, 68, of Knifley, KY died Friday, April 9, 2021 at Norton Hospital in Louisville, KY.  He was born in Knifley, KY on July 12, 1952 to the late John R. and Sarah Frances Stapleton Jones

 

Mr. Jones was a member of the Hovious Mission Church.  Along with his son they had Jones Construction and built many homes and other projects in the area.  He enjoyed working on old tractors and trucks and spending time with his family and friends.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jerri Lynn Jones.

Marshall Bloyd, 79, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Thursday, April 8, 2021 at his residence. He was born on Monday, June 23, 1941 in Russell Springs, KY, the son of the late J.P. Bloyd and Exzona (Blakey) Bloyd.

 

Marshall retired from the United States Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was also a former employee of Fruit of the Loom.

TOMMY KINNETT, 70, JAMESTOWN, KY


Tommy J. Kinnett, 70, of Jamestown, KY passed away on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at his home. Born on June 5, 1950 in Somerset, KY, he was a son of the late James Homer “Smokey” and Betty Cooper Kinnett.
 

Tommy was an US Navy veteran, a retired controller for UTP Materials in Houston, Texas, and owner/operator of a local trailer park. He loved walking his dog, Luna, and traveling across the state visiting flea markets. Tommy enjoyed collecting pictures and framed art and reading. He was a giver and loved his family.

Genevia Harden, 89, of Columbia, KY died Monday, April 5, 2021 at T.J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow. She was born May 5, 1931 in Pineville, KY to the late Warren and Eller Markle Thompson. 
 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, B.C. Harden, her daughter, Judy Carol Harden Pickerell and a niece, Donna Ramey.

 

Genevia was a member of Columbia Church of Christ and former owner/operator of Harden’s Discount and Auction Barn.

Winfrey Gerald “Mick” Burton, 76, of Columbia, KY died Monday, April 5, 2021 at his home. He was born February 26, 1945 to the late Carl and Altha Pyles Burton. 

 

Mick was a licensed barber, had managed Burton Brothers Service Station for over 20 years, a member of Emory’s Chapel United Methodist Church where he faithfully attended until his recent illness. 

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Keith “Kevin" Burton, Clifton “Wayne” Burton and one sister, JoAnn Burton.

Nellie Nancy Burton, 80, of Columbia, KY died Sunday, April 4, 2021 at Baptist Health in Elizabethtown, KY. She was born in Adair County on April 26, 1940 to the late Charlie “Toad” and Clara Opal Burton Harmon.
 
Mrs. Burton was a member of the Calvary Temple Church where she was a youth Sunday School Teacher for many years. She was a former employee of Fruit of the Loom and Oshkosh and loved to quilt and spend time with her family and friends.
 
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 2 children: Mae Beverly Burton and Michael Bradley Burton and a granddaughter, Tonia Rena Helm.

Marilyn McKinney Noel, 68, of Shelbyville, KY (formerly of Adair County, KY) died Saturday, March 13, 2021 at her residence. She was born on January 18, 1953 in Columbia, KY to the late Edward and Helen Willis McKinney.
 

She was a wonderful person and a terrific mother. She loved teaching at Bullitt East High School and wanted to inspire her students. She received the Teacher of the Year Award during her career.  

 

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her beloved son, William Trenton Noel.

Freddie was a devoted Christian who loved the Lord and his family very much! He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. Freddie was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of Adair County High School and was retired from the U. S. Navy after serving 20 years.
