KENYATTA "K.D." DUNCAN, 48, COLUMBIA, KY

 

Kenyatta “K.D.” Duncan, 48, of Columbia, KY died Monday, February 27, 2023 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset, KY. He was born December 17, 1974 in Burkesville, KY. 

 

He was preceded in death by his father, Phillip Owen Carey and his step-father, Jim Henry Smith. 

 

Kenyatta was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist church, a graduate of Adair County High School where he excelled in all sports, was an accomplished welder and an excellent cook, most recently working at OK Country Cooking.

NORMAN JUNIOR GRIDER, 80, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY

 
Norman Junior Grider, 80, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Monday, February 27, 2023 at Fair Oaks Nursing Home in Jamestown, KY. He was born on January 31, 1943 in Russell Springs, KY, the son of the late Norman Grider and Mary Gentry Grider.
 
Junior was a retired employee of Tarter Gate. He was of the Baptist faith and attended several different churches in the area.
 
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Edwin Grider.

SHEREE MILLER, 65, JAMESTOWN, KY

 
Sheree Miller, 65, of Jamestown, KY passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at Wright’s Retirement Home in Summersville. She was born on December 3, 1957 in Somerset, KY, the daughter of Marsha Gaskins Williams and the late Dennis “Mickey” Williams.
 
Sheree was a retired inspector at Fruit of the Loom. She liked spending time outdoors and was an animal lover. Sheree enjoyed horseback riding and hunting for ginseng. She also enjoyed playing bingo. 
 
In addition to her father, Sheree was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight Miller, who passed away on April 9, 2020.

MARY JOSEPHINE HOPPER, 76, RUSSELL COUNTY, KY

 

Mary Josephine Hopper, 76, of the Salem Community, passed from this life to her eternal home on Sunday, February 26, 2023. She was born December 31, 1946 in Eli, a daughter of the late Irvin and Ilith Coffey Whittle.  

 

She married Lowell Hopper on October 19, 1963. There were two children born to their union.

 

Mary Jo was a member of Clear Springs Baptist Church where she led Wednesday night children’s services. She loved her church family and cherished the “after Sunday Night service business meetings” held every Sunday night. Mary Jo loved to garden and enjoyed cooking and sewing. She put her many talents to use when she and Lowell would work together, building churches with the Carpenters for Christ. Mary Jo was a Christian lady who loved every one she met.

1 daughter: Becky Hopper of Salem

PAUL KAEILIN, 84, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY

 

Paul Kaelin, 84, of Russell Springs, KY passed from this life on Sunday, February 26, 2023 at the Russell County Hospital. He was born on November 20, 1938 in Greenwood, Indiana, a son of the late Joe and Edna Kaelin.

 

Paul lived in Texas for much of his life and was a true Texas cowboy! He was a rodeo rider for many years. As a career, he drove a semi for more than 30 years, then started a second career working at Stephens Pipe and Steel as a supervisor for the next 30 years.

 

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty M. Kaelin of Russell Springs and a brother, Joseph Kaelin of Texas.

Lucille Harden, 78, of Columbia, KY passed away Saturday, February 25, 2023, at Hosparus Inpatient Care Center in Louisville, KY. She was born in Illinois on June 2, 1944, to the late Otto and Dorothy Wright Catron. 

 

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Don E. Harden; a son, Jack Catron; and two siblings: Jimmy and Joyce Catron.

 

Mrs. Harden was a member of the Columbia Church of Christ and enjoyed shopping, flower gardening and spending time with her family and her best friend Ida Doss.

TRUESDELL A. MEECE, 100, NEW WINCHESTER, INDIANA


Truesdell A. Meece, 100, passed away peacefully at his home in New Winchester, Hendricks County, Indiana on February 23, 2023. He was born January 30, 1923 in Eli (Russell County) KY to the late Avery and Lora Effie (Foley) Meece. 

 

He was a lifelong, avid farmer who was never more at home than when working the fields or tending his cattle. After moving to Indiana in the early 1950s, True worked for P. R. Mallory as a tool and die maker and estimator.  He was later employed by Naval Avionics where he retired as a shop supervisor. True never retired from farming. 

 

For True, there was no greater treasure than his wife, Ethel (Chapman) Meece whom he married December 23, 1944 in Russell County, KY.  The two eventually settled in New Winchester, Indiana where together they owned and operated T & E Registered Angus Cattle Farms. Ethel was his love, his life and his joy for 55 years until her passing in 1999.

 

SURVIVORS:

1 brother: Avery Roger Meece (Mary Ellen) of Noblesville, Indiana and his loving and devoted niece, Charlene Harris, of Russell Springs, Kentucky.

Along with his parents and wife, True was preceded in death by his sisters: Afteel Dayette Smith (Charles Bascum), Isla Gladys Smith (Ernest) and a brother, Dwight Cromwell Meece (Doris).

JAMES KEITH DUNBAR, 55, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY

 

James Keith Dunbar, 55, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Thursday, February 23, 2023 at Russell County Hospital following an extended illness. He was born November 12, 1967 in Wanamaker, Indiana, the son of the late James “Jimmy” Dunbar and Nelda Sullivan Dunbar who survives.  

 

Keith was a past employee of Fruit of the Loom in Jamestown and had worked for over 20 years at Stephens Pipe and Steel.

1 daughter: Erynn Elisabeth Dunbar of Jefferson, Georgia

CARL FORD, SR., 87, KNIFLEY, KY

 

Carl Ford, Sr., 87, of Knifley, KY, son of the late Rue Ford and Bertha May Callahan Ford was born July 11, 1935 in Merrimac, KY and departed this life on Friday, February 17, 2023 at his home in Knifley.

 

He professed faith in Christ and was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Louisville, KY. Carl was a welder and fabricator for many years. He owned Ford Custom Welding for over 35 years. Carl enjoyed working on Model A cars, woodworking, and landscaping. He was a member of the Model A and Hudson clubs and of the Moose Lodge.

 
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by 10 brothers & sisters: Ruby McDonald, Rue Ford, Ray Ford, Daniel Ford, “Zip” Reese, Ena Hicks, Ina Humphress, Marsa Cox, Wilma Combs, and Anita Elmore.

Irvin Ray Claywell, 82, of Columbia, KY passed away Monday, February 20, 2023 at the Frankfort Regional Medical Center in Frankfort, KY. He was born in Breeding, KY on April 15, 1940 to the late Otis and Ruby Branham Claywell.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Watson Claywell; a stepson, Raymond Watson; and a brother, Lyman Claywell.

 

Mr. Claywell was a member of the Hadley Community Church. He was an avid University of Kentucky sports fan and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

LUCIAN LILBURN REYNOLDS, 81, NANCY, KY

 

Lucian Lilburn Reynolds, 81, of Nancy, KY passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset. He was born February 24, 1941 in the Meadow Creek community of Wayne County, a son of the late Knarvel and Dosha Mae Morrow Reynolds.
 

Lucian was a self-taught auto mechanic who loved building and racing racecars. He also enjoyed gardening and working on his property.

His wife: Violet Russell of Russell Springs

2 daughters: Deanna (Anthony) Coyle of Greensburg, Indiana and Dorcus Reynolds-Young of Columbus, Ohio

In addition to his parents, Lucian was preceded in death by one son, Charles E. Reynolds; one great-grandchild, Drayden Keith Collins and ten brothers & sisters.

A private family service will be held at a later date with inurnment to follow in McBeath Cemetery.

JOHN JACK GARRETT, 89, COLUMBIA, KY


John “Jack” Garrett, 89, of Columbia, KY passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on the evening of Sunday, February 19, 2023.


He lived in New Jersey and graduated in 1952 from Trenton Catholic Boys School. He attended Rider College in Lawrence Township, New Jersey and majored in business. Later, he worked for 37 years as a purchasing agent for DeLaval (Later IMO Industries). When a new opportunity arose, he accepted a transfer to their newest location and moved with his family to Columbia, KY. It was a move he never regretted.


He took pleasure in helping other achieve success, including assisting local college students learn English as a second language and taking part in numerous volunteer, church and civic groups. He was a member of the Central Kentucky Amateur Radio Club, the Military Affiliate Radio System, Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, the Bell Pepper Festival, Columbia Community Choir, Adair County Band Boosters and Boy Scouts of America. He held numerous positions as a long-time parishioner at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Columbia, KY.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Aaron and Catherine Garrett.

 

SURVIVORS:

His wife of 62 years: Janis Davidson Garrett

2 sons: Brian (Casi) and Mark (Chasidy)

6 grandchildren: Tasha, BJ, Caitlin, Cailean, Noah and Ainslee.

 

Funeral Mass: 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church with Rev. Patrick Dolan officiating. A meal will be served after the service.

 

The family request that no flowers be sent, but would appreciate a donation to Good Shepherd Catholic Church or to the Charity of the donor’s choice, in memory of Jack Garrett.

GLADYS "PAULINE" HARRIS, 100, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY


Gladys “Pauline” Harris, 100, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Saturday, February 18, 2023 at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset. She was born August 10, 1922 in Cumberland County, daughter of the late Paul and Fannie Murphy Potts. 
 

Pauline spent many years teaching school.

Along with her parents, Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, ‘Chuck”, who passed away June 11, 1995; her sister, Lillie Jean Bettens Humble; and her niece, Donna Jean Bettens Burress.

CARSON RAMSEY LAWLESS, 73, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY

 

Carson Ramsey Lawless, 73, of Russell Springs, KY passed away at his home on Friday, February 17, 2023. Born December 28, 1949 in Glasgow, KY, he was a son of the late William Carson and Opal Kathleen Ramsey Lawless. 
 

Carson was a United States Army Veteran and a paratrooper of the 101stAirborne Division, with over 200 jumps in his military career. He was a salesman for John Deere farm equipment for more than 40 years. Carson was a member of the Caretakers Riding Club, and he enjoyed riding his motorcycle for charity, while raising money for worthy causes. He was also a farmer, and a well-known farrier in the community. Carson was a big-hearted man that loved his family and all those lucky enough to be part of his life. He was a good father to his children and a good “Pa” to his grandchildren. Carson was the type of person that never met a stranger. For those that knew him, he was a living legend. For those that didn’t, they missed an opportunity to gain a lifelong friend.

12 grandchildren: Bethany Carr, Haley Cook, Seth Carr, Ethan McClister, Brandon Leach, Erin Bell, Joseph McDowell, Elizabeth Stamper, Kayln Fair, Alyanna Fair, Kyle Carr, and Jordan Carr

3 great-grandchildren: Gabriel Rios, Jaxon Bell, and Brylee Bell

In addition to his parents, Carson was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Carol Browning Lawless, who passed away September 9, 2019 and a brother-in-law, Harold Lane.

 

Funeral Service: 1:00 PM CST Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at Bernard Funeral Home with Bro. Michael Carnes and Bro. Kenny Kimbler officiating. 


Following the service, the Caretakers Riding Club and the Motorcycle Hearse of Kentucky will lead the procession, and transport Mr. Lawless to his interment at Wolford Cemetery. Full military honors will be provided by the Russell County Honor Guard.

 

Visitation: 5:00 to 8:00 PM CST Monday, February 20, 2023 and after 8:00 AM CST on Tuesday

Elroy “Buck” Rowe, 90, of Columbia, KY died Thursday, February 16, 2023 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville. He was born February 6, 1933 in Adair County, KY to the late William “Bill” and Mable Elizabeth Loy Rowe.  

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Norris Rowe in 1998. 

 

Buck was a member of Sparksville Church of the Nazarene and a retired farmer.

Joyce Walker, 79, of Knifley, KY, the daughter of the late George Ford and Carrie (Shaw) Kavich, was born June 23, 1943 in Louisville, KY and departed this life Tuesday, February 14, 2023 in Louisville at the Norton Hosparus Inpatient Center.

 

She had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Knifley Christian Church. Joyce enjoyed collecting dolls, crafting, loved jewelry and shopping.

 

She united in marriage to Franklin Roosevelt Walker who preceded her in death in 2017. Besides her parents and husband, she was also preceded in deth by a brother, Buddy Kavich.

Faye Stotts, 69, of Columbia, KY died Tuesday, February 14, 2023 at 5:00 A.M. at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset. She was born January 13, 1954 in Adair County to the late Elvin and Mamie Burton Cowan.

ANITA DARLENE CARPENTER, 86, RUSSELL COUNTY, KY

 
The Honorable Anita Darlene Carpenter, 86, of Russell County, KY passed from this life on Sunday, February 12, 2023 at her home. She was born September 8, 1936 in Russell County, the daughter of the late Harley Ray and Thelma Loy Dunbar.  
 

She professed her faith in Christ Jesus in 1948, and was a long-time member of Welfare Baptist Church. Ms. Carpenter was proud to be a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels since 1979.  She was an excellent ambassador for the State of Kentucky while working as a hostess for many years at Lake Cumberland State Park.

 

Ms. Carpenter was an avid reader, which was evidenced in her wealth of knowledge on many topics. She loved her church and could always be found in conversation with family and friends. She was also a big UK fan and an even bigger Russell County Laker fan. She was proud to have been in the first graduating class of Russell County High School that chose the school colors, Laker name and school motto. She loved her friends and family deeply and always took time to send cards for birthdays and special occasions. No doubt many reading this have received one of her cards, sent with love.

KATHERINE "KAT" WINFREY SYLVAS, 78, LOUISVILLE, KY (RUSSELL COUNTY NATIVE)


Kathrine “Kat” Winfrey Sylvas, 78, of Louisville KY, (a native of Russell County), went to her heavenly home in the early morning of Sunday, February 5, 2023. She was born the 10th child of the late Thomas and Georgia (Sallee) Winfrey on March 19, 1944.

 

Kat received Jesus Christ at an early age at Cedar Grove Baptist church. She graduated from Russell County high school in 1962, and then moved to Louisville KY. She later met her husband Lionel Sylvas at a dance on the Fort Knox Army base. They were later married on January 23, 1966 and were blessed to have 2 children, Angela and Antoine Sylvas. The young family lived in Detroit MI, Miami FL and later settled in Burke VA. Kathrine found a loving church home at Burke Assembly of God (today known as Jubilee Christian Center). She also secured a job with State Farm Insurance where she remained for 30 yrs until her retirement. After retirement she and her husband moved around a bit. New Orleans LA, Jeffersonville IN, and Richmond VA before settling in Louisville KY where Kathrine enjoyed being close to family and friends. Her faith, family and friends were the joys of her life. How she lived out her faith was a source of strength to many. She had a profoundly generous heart. Where she felt a need she gave. She had a ‘sassy’ sense of humor, which always left the listener(s) with a chuckle.

 

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by 6 brothers: Walter Winfrey, James “Bubby” Winfrey, Norman Winfrey, Frank Winfrey, Wendell Winfrey, & Thomas Winfrey and 2 sisters: Gloria Calhoun and Nora Lee Garrison.

Norene Willis Feese, 83, of Knifley, KY passed away Sunday, February 12, 2023 at her residence with her family by her side. She was born in Adair County, KY on November 30, 1939 to the late James Luther and Malissia Rice Willis.
 

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Clement Feese; a son, John Clement Feese; a grandson, Michael Lee Farmer; and two siblings: Alton Willis and Fanny Bell Pederson.

 

Mrs. Feese was of the Baptist faith and previously attended Plum Point Baptist Church and Charity Baptist Church and most recently SONrise Church. She enjoyed cooking and caring for her family, friends, and anyone in need.

Kenneth James Polowy, 72, of Columbia, KY was born in Chicago, IL on June 10, 1950 to the late Walter C. Polowy and Stella Kosowski Polowy. He departed this life on Sunday, February 5, 2023 at his residence.
 
He served his country honorably in the U.S. Air Force. He was employed as a truck driver and was of the Catholic Faith. Mr. Polowy was an avid lover of race cars, Harley Davidson and love riding motorcycles, going to concerts, casinos and aggravating people.

Barbara Obeginski, 81, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Friday, February 10, 2023 at the Metcalfe Health Care Center. She was born July 27, 1941 in Bradford, Arkansas, the daughter of the late Noah Morgan and Ivoy Clark Morgan.
 
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Obeginski. 
 
Barbara and Charles retired to Russell County in 1994. After several years vacationing in the Lake Cumberland area, they decided to move here and build their house, designed by Charles, and begin their dream of a quiet country retirement. Barbara was an avid reader and sewer. She worked in accounting and was a longtime associate at Walmart.

Dorothy Ellen England Fletcher, 101, of Columbia, KY passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at Summit Manor Nursing Home. She was born on May 30, 1921 in Breeding, KY to the late James and Nancy Ethel England.

 

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, James Ervin Fletcher; two children: Sandra Estes and Bobby Fletcher; a son-in-law, Randy Collier; and eight siblings: Owe, Fred, Orville, Ode, Eola, Mary, Estelle, and Ella.

 

Mrs. Fletcher was a member of the Glensfork United methodist Church and a former member of the Glensfork Homemakers Club. She and her husband were the former part owners and operators of Warner Fertilizer. She enjoyed quilting, cooking, cleaning, and spending time with her family and friends.

James Martin "Marty" Brewner, 59, of North Vernon, Indiana passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2023 at his residence. Born May 1, 1963, in Columbus, he was the son of Loretta (Terry) Goodin and the late Gary Brewner.
 

He was with his very loving and special companion, Glenda Farmer, for 8 years. Marty served in the United States Army for 10 years and worked for Animal Control in Jennings County. He was a member of Am Vet’s Post #7 in North Vernon and a former member of the Moose Lodge and The Eagles Lodge, both in North Vernon. Marty enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Benjamin Samuel Curry, 82 of Shepherdsville, KY passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2023 at Norton Audubon Hospital. He was a native of Adair County, KY, a son of the late Ausie “Rattler” and Ida Sinclair Curry.


Benjamin was a Baptist by faith and a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church. He was a member of Shivley Masonic Lodge #951. Benjamin was also an avid University of Kentucky fan and loved deer hunting and deep-sea fishing.

 

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three sons: Gregory, Brian and Gerald Curry and three siblings: Thelbert Curry, Gwen Curry and Nona Bess Bennett.

Elnora attended Who-So-Ever-Will Community Church and Calvary Christian Church, both in Edinburgh. She had worked at David R. Webb Company in Edinburgh and Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. She enjoyed shopping, quilting, and yard sales.

 

She married Arnold Burton on August 6, 1952 and he preceded her in death on February 2, 2010.
