PAULINE CHEATHAM, 99, ADAIR COUNTY, KY


Pauline Cheatham, 99, of the Garlin Community of Adair County, KY died Saturday, July 31, 2021 at the Casey County Hospital in Liberty, KY.  She was born on January 19, 1922 to the late J. W. “Willie” and Mamie Wilcoxson Stephens. 
 

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Price Cheatham on July 5, 2010; two granddaughters: Jill & Amanda Blair on July 3, 1985; and 5 siblings: Milton, Johnny, C.C. and Billy Stephens and Ruth Grant. 

 

Mrs. Cheatham was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. She was an Avon Sale Representative, worked at Cheatham and Wethington Ashland Oil Distributor, a former greeter at Walmart and a homemaker. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed spending time with all of her family.

PAUL W. WILSON, 72, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY

 
Paul W. Wilson, 72, of Russell Springs, KY passed away at his home on Thursday, July 29, 2021 surrounded by his family. Born on July 18, 1949 in Somerset, he was the son of the late Lester and Hazel Robertson Wilson.  
 
Paul was a teacher in the Russell County School system who taught business classes and typing. He retired from teaching after working for more than 20 years. Paul enjoyed woodworking and restoring old tractors and Case knives. He was a member of New Friendship Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his uncle, Ollie J. Robertson.

Glendo Popplewell, 90, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Thursday, July 29, 2021 at Russell County Hospital. Born on April 21, 1931 in Jamestown, KY, he was a son of the late Larkin and Cora F. George Popplewell. 
 
Glendo worked as a farm hand most of his life and was known for farming with his mules.
 
In addition to his parents, Glendo was preceded in death by 4 brothers: Herbert, Londo, Curtis and Donald Popplewell; and 2 sisters: Zilma Morton and Faye Stephens.

BRADY CONRAD BUTTON, 45, GLASGOW, KY

 
Brady Conrad Button, 45, of Glasgow, KY died Tuesday, July 27, 2021. He was born August 16, 1975 in Warren County to the late Freddie Button and Debbie (David) Button Wells, who survives. 
 
Brady attended Eastern Elementary and Temple Hill Elementary before attending Barren County High School. During his high school career he was a basketball standout. He was named to the first team all-region, two years all-district, and was a member of his high school’s 1,000 point club. After high school, he attended Lindsey Wilson College from 1993-1998 earning a Bachelor of Arts with emphasis in finance and management. As a Blue Raider, Brady was a shooting guard on the Men’s basketball team and was named 1995 homecoming king by his student body. He played a key role on the 1996-1997 Lindsey Wilson men’s basketball team, which made the program’s first appearance in the NAIA National Tournament. Brady stayed active in the Adair County Community and was a member of Adair County Chamber of Commerce.
 
Brady was a loyal member of Caney Fork Missionary Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School. He was employed since 2005 at Lindsey Wilson College where he was the Director of Major Gifts. He was also the Barren County Middle School boy’s 7th grade basketball coach and the Barren County Trojanettes Elementary travel team coach. Brady was a little league basketball and baseball coach for the last several years.
 
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents: George & Helen Button; maternal grandparent, Bobby Bradley; and maternal great-grandparents: Paul & Mary Sneed.

EARL BRADSHAW, 81, COLUMBIA, KY

 

Earl Bradshaw, 81, of Columbia, KY died Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at T.J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow. He was born May 25, 1940 in Adair County, KY to the late Granville and Ella Stotts Bradshaw. 

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Wilson Bradshaw on September 4, 2012. 

 

Earl was a member of Columbia Church of Christ, a self-employed automobile body repairman, worked at the Recycling Center and enjoyed fishing.

Reba Moore Akin, 88, of Columbia, KY died Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at T.J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow. She was born July 4, 1933 in Adair County. 

 

She was preceded in death by her father, Arvis Raymond Moore; her mother, Ruth Hamilton Pinkney; her husband, Finley Akin; a son & daughter-in-law: Mike and Rochelle Akin; a granddaughter, Sarah Akin Morrison; and 3 great-grandchildren: Kayson and Lathan Morrison and Austin Bryant.

 

Reba was a member of Big Creek Missionary Baptist Church, worked at Fruit of the Loom for several years and retired as a CNA from T.J. Samson Community Hospital.

ROBERT MERIDETH, 73, JAMESTOWN, KY


Robert W. Merideth, 73, of Jamestown, KY passed away Saturday, July 24, 2021 at his residence. He was born in Park City, KY on December 31, 1947, a son of the late Marjorie (Hogan) and Robert Merideth. 

Robert served in the U.S. Army and the USAR for 22 years, fighting in the TET Offensive-Kontum and Battle of Lang VIE. He recieved several Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.

BRO. EDWARD EUGENE GRASHAM, 73, COLUMBIA, KY

 

Bro. Edward Eugene “Gene” Grasham, 73, of Columbia, KY died Sunday, July 25, 2021 at his home after a short illness. He was born November 16, 1947 in Jellico, Tennessee to the late Robert Hood and Mary Margaret Staples Grasham. 

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a special aunt, Fannie Grasham Flowers.

 

He lived in Sandy Flat, KY until going to Johnson Bible College in 1966 to study for the ministry, graduating in 1970. He served student ministries in Glen Alice, Tennessee and Woodbine, KY. He married Barbara Sue Martin on August 1, 1969 and together they served Christian Churches in Pulaski, Illinois, Bedford, Indiana, Loogootee, Indiana, Byrdstown, Tennessee and Hedgesville, West Virginia before retiring in 2016. Since retirement, he has preached part-time at Westview Christian Church in Albany, KY and Cane Valley Christian Church in Cane Valley, KY.  At the time of his death, he was a member of Columbia Christian Church where he served on the Evangelism and Mission Ministry Teams, had taught Wednesday night Bible study and Sunday School. He was very involved in the Adair County Food Pantry and making sure the Cox Cemetery was always taken care of.

HARRY ALLEN KIMBLER, 74, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY


Harry Allen Kimbler, 74, was born on September 9, 1946 to Edgar and Ruby Roy Kimbler, both deceased. 

 

Harry loved and sang gospel music for many years with various groups such as: The Deliverance Quartet, The Rock of Ages Quartet, The Blakey Quartet and Pure Gospel. He was a member of Fairview Separate Baptist Church. Harry was also a former farmer, school bus driver and served as a Russell County School Board member. He was an organ (liver) recipient in 2005 and was blessed with nearly 16 years of extended life.

 

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by 3 brothers: Jack Kimbler, Bobby Kimbler and Joe Kimbler and one deceased brother-in-law, Don Cook.

LA VERNE STEPHENS, 84, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY

 

La Verne B. Stephens, 84, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at Fair Oaks Nursing Facility in Jamestown. La Verne was born on February 6, 1937 in the Webbs Crossroads community of Russell County, daughter of the late Oris and Agnes Smith Beane. 

She retired after 22 years of teaching Special Education at Russell Springs Elementary School. La Verne loved the outdoors and in warm weather, would be found outside tending a garden, working in flowers or pulling weeds.  She was an animal lover, and was especially fond of her cats. La Verne was an avid reader and enjoyed working her crossword puzzles.

 

She is survived by her sons: Richard (and Debbie) Stephens of Jamestown, Lanny Stephens of Russell Springs, and Kyle (and Judy) Stephens of Russell Springs; her daughters: Shannon (and Norm) Biller of Lexington, and Deidre (and Steve) Richardson, of Russell Springs; her grandchildren: Ryan (and Sara), Kynna, Keli (and Jeremy), Jonn, Khari, Seth and Samantha (and Ben); and several great-grandchildren.

 

Along with her parents, La Verne is preceded in death by her husband, Urias “Deedle” Stephens, Jr., who passed away on Saturday, July 12, 2014; and her sister, Marlene Smith.

Carolyn Ann Williamson, 74, of Columbia, KY died Friday, July 23, 2021 at T.J. Health Columbia. She was born on June 28, 1947 in Cumberland, MD to the late Carl G. and Emma Jean Smith Stierstorfer.

 

Carolyn was a member of Central Church of Christ and enjoyed crafts and decorating.  She loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Carolyn was also a homemaker and a devoted Detroit Tigers fan.

John Mitchel Owen “Bam” Carney, 51, of Campbellsville, KY, son of June Gabehart Carney and the late Ronnie “Don” Carney, was born September 30, 1969 in Taylor County, KY. He died at 7:02 A.M., Saturday, July 17, 2021 in Lexington.

 

He professed faith in Christ and was a member of 3 Trees Church. Bam was an educator, having taught and coached at Taylor County, Campbellsville Independent, and Washington County School Systems. He was elected in 2009 as a State Representative in the 51st District where he served until his passing.

William Ray Corbin, 69, passed away on Friday, July 16, 2021 at Fair Oaks Health and Rehabilitation in Jamestown, KY after a long illness due to a stroke. Ray was born March 19, 1952 in Adair County, KY to the late Ray K. Corbin and Lela Roberts. 
 
He was a carpenter. Ray loved his truck and enjoyed going 4-wheeling and playing in the mud. He was a member of  Russell Springs Christian Church and loved attending when able. 
 
In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his step-mother, Dorothy Roberts Corbin.

Raymond “Ray” Benaitis, 78, of Moss Road in Campbellsville, KY passed away early Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at his home. He was the son of the late Anthony and Helen (Brazaitis) Benaitis and was born October 2, 1942 in Chicago, IL.

 

Ray had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Mt. Roberts Baptist Church. He was a precision grinding machinist. Ray, as he was mostly called, was an opera music fanatic and enjoyed singing it as well. He liked country and western music, enjoyed cooking and was a fix-it man. He also enjoyed deer hunting and fishing.

Before becoming homebound, he attended Victory Community Church in Columbia, KY.  Owen was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Thelma Irene Patton Garcia, 84, of Fallbrook, CA and formerly of Columbia, KY died Friday, July 2, 2021 at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, CA. She was born on March 8, 1937 in Cincinnati, OH to the late William H. and Ethel Brown Patton.  
 
Thelma was a member of the Egypt Christian Church, Order of the Eastern Star and U. S. Embassy Wife’s Club. She was an entrepreneur and owned her own floral design company, but the joy of her life was being a loving wife to Don and mother to Tom and Tim. 
 
In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Sgt. Major Don Garcia who was retired from the United State Marine Corps with US Embassy assignments worldwide; 2 brothers: Nathaniel Patton and Herman Patton; and 3 sisters: Dorothy Patton, Linda Sue Patton and Hilda Ellis.

Gene Wayne Barnes, 78, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Monday, July 12, 2021 at Russell County Hospital. He was born on April 9, 1943 in Russell County, KY, the son of the late Joseph B. and Dollie Mae Wilson Barnes. 
 

Gene married Joyce Kilpatrick on December 20, 1961. 
 

He was the owner and operator of Russell Springs Milling Company for over 60 years and was a member of Russell Springs Christian Church.

Constance “Connie” Hopper Jones, 71, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2021 at her home. She was born in Louisville, KY on November 18, 1949, a daughter of the late Jetha Hopper and Evelyn Katzman Hopper (who survives).  
 
She was a graduate of the University of Kentucky School of Pharmacy and worked for her dad at Hopper Drug Store in Russell Springs for several years, then worked at a pharmacy in Liberty, KY until retiring. Connie was an active member of Liberty Baptist Church in Russell Springs, leading the church choir for years.

REBECCA ANN "BECKY" CONOVER STRANGE, 46, KNIFLEY, KY

 

Rebecca Ann “Becky” Conover Strange, 46, of Knifley, KY died Sunday, July 11, 2021 at the TJ Health Columbia Emergency Room as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born May 4, 1975 in Adair County, KY to Rev. Gene and the late Cathy Johnson Conover. 

 

Becky graduated from Adair County High School and Lindsey Wilson College. She was a member, teen class Sunday School teacher and was very involved with the Ladies Ministries at Columbia Church of God. She was also an independent Scentsy consultant along with her husband, Brian, and loved crafting.

 

Becky loved life and was always concerned about those around her and was always there to lend a listening ear or a helping hand, often going above and beyond, even when she didn’t feel like it herself. Her smile was infectious and her sassiness is what made her so unique. She lived a godly life in word and deed and she was never tired of sharing her testimony or the love of Jesus.

 

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her grandparents: Rufus & Lillie Conover, Richard & Ada Guffey, Fred Johnson, and Pat York; and a brother-in-law, Troy Strange.

Jerry Jones-Johnson, 91, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2021 at her home. Born on October 10, 1929 in the Esto Community of Russell County, she was the daughter of the late Carl B. and Elizabeth Oakes Phelps. 
 
Known by many as “Miss Jerry,” she was a retired teacher for the Russell County Board of Education with 33 years of dedicated service. She was also a member of Russell Springs Christian Church.
 
In addition to her parents, Miss Jerry was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Wallace Jones, who passed away on August 29, 1988; one son, Alan Phelps Jones; one grandson, Paul Alan Jones; one brother, John D. Phelps; and one nephew, John Carl Phelps.

Mary Lou Ashbrook, 94, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at Fair Oaks Health and Rehabilitation in Jamestown, KY. Born on May 11, 1927 in Adair County, KY, she was the only child of the late Virtus and Myrtle Reese Conover. 
 
Mary was a retired seamstress and a member of White’s Chapel Separate Baptist Church. She also attended Coffey’s Grove Separate Baptist Church with her family. Mary enjoyed sewing, working with her flowers, and the company of her dog. 
 
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Ashbrook, who passed away on January 31, 1996; two sons, Alan Ashbrook and James Ashbrook; and two daughters, Diana Atchley and Brenda Ashbrook.

COLUMBIA, KY., Sammy DeWayne King, 71, of Columbia, KY passed away Sunday, July 4, 2021 at his residence. He was born on Harrison Avenue in Central City, KY on September 15, 1949 the son of Elentrial King and Sally Kate Morgan King.
 

He was a UMWA coal miner working for Peabody and Island Creek Mines and he retired from the TVA Paradise Steam Plant where he worked in operations. He was a member of Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Central City, and he was a lifetime member of Masonic Lodge #673 in Central City, KY. He was a Vietnam era Army veteran attaining the rank of Sergeant.   

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers Bobby King, Ernest Ray King, and Roger Arnold.

 

He is survived by his wife of 30 years Pamela Kaye Knight King of Columbia, daughter Brandi Brooks of Central City, son Chance D. King of Beattyville, 3 grandchildren Samantha Dennel, Robert Eversole, and Grady King, 8 great grandchildren Cameron, Hunter, Jaden, Trinity, Raelynn, Kylee, Maryella, and Jaxton, 1 sister Gennie (John Crymes) Tapp of Bald Knob, AR., 2 brothers Billy (Donna) King of McHenry and Jimmy (Regina) Arnold of Central City.

Sondra Campbell Wooldridge, 75, of Jamestown, KY passed away on Sunday, July 4, 2021 at Russell County Hospital following long battle with multiple sclerosis. Born on September 7, 1945, Sondra was the daughter of the late James Edward and Florence Mann Campbell.  
 
She was born and raised in Creelsboro and enjoyed reliving and sharing stories from her home community. She was a dairy farmer and was retired from Fruit of the Loom. Sondra was very devoted to her family and was an avid history buff and a collector of Civil War books and memorabilia. She was a member of French Valley United Methodist Church.
 
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her former spouse, Robert Glenn Wooldridge.

Danny Wendell Buster, 80, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Monday, July 5, 2021 at Russell County Hospital. Danny was born on March 24, 1941 in Creelsboro, the son of the late Wendell H. and Ruth Viola Caddell Buster. 
 

He was a veteran of the United States Army. Danny worked 34 years with the General Electric Company and 16 years with Russell County Hospital. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, trips to Renfro Valley and was a lover of all kinds of music. His passion was anything Creelsboro, his home community, his main stay.

Susanna C. Burkett, 77, of Russell Springs, KY, passed away Friday, July 2, 2021 at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset, KY. Susanna was born in Russell Springs, KY on August 25, 1943, a daughter of the late Rosalia E. (Scales) and Leo L. Roy. 

She was a homemaker.

Mindy Roxanne Ford-Curry, 60, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Saturday, July 3, 2021 at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset, KY. Born on January 10, 1961, she was daughter of the late A.G. Ford and Emily Guffey.
 

Mindy was married to Davis Curry for 22 years. She worked for many years at Fruit of the Loom and Kroger.

He was a janitorial worker and member of Caldwell Ridge Separate Baptist Church.

Wanda Diane Murphy, 72, of Columbia, KY died Friday, July 2, 2021 at her home.  She was born November 30, 1948 in Cumberland County, KY to the late Earl and Pauline Flowers Groce.  
 
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell Leon Murphy and a brother, Jerry Groce. 
 
Diane was a member of Sparksville Church of the Nazarene and retired from Topps Safety Apparel.

JOHN DAVID EMERSON, 80, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY

 
John David Emerson, 80, of Russell Springs, KY passed away at his home on Thursday, June 30, 2021. He was born in Urbana, Illinois on September 18, 1940, son of the late Avery and Lula Aaron Emerson.  
 
John was a veteran of the United States Army.  He worked many jobs through his working years. He worked for Charlie Bell Pontiac, for Bill Prather at the Somerset Volkswagen dealership, hauled mobile homes for the Jasper Mobile Home dealership, for Fred and Morris Skidmore at Skidmore’s Used Cars, and spent many years on the road and in the shop for Jim Sharpe at Sharpe Houseboats. He made a lot friends along the way.  
 
John and his brother, “Red-eye”, loved dirt track racing. He loved sports and kept up with all the local teams. John loved watching the Cincinnati Reds. He attended the Dunnville Church of God.
 
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, James Avery Emerson.
