OPAL WATSON, 89, COLUMBIA, KY

 

Opal Watson, 89, of Columbia, KY died Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at TJ Health Columbia. She was born March 25, 1933 in Adair County to the late Clarence and Nannie Hardin Goode. 

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas M. “Buck” Watson; her daughter, Linda Sue Watson Judd; and two brothers: L.J. Goode and Richard Marshall Goode.

 

Opal was a long-time member of Tabernacle Christian Church and later a member of Shiloh Christian Church. She was a Sunday School Teacher for years, a former merchant, Real Estate Broker and retired from the Adair County Health Department as a Clinical Assistant. She loved gardening, sewing, handwork, solving puzzles and cooking family dinners.

Shirley Ann Hoover, 69, of Columbia, KY passed away Sunday, November 27, 2022 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. She was born on August 22, 1953 in Taylor County, KY to the late Roy and Evelyn Burris Squires.


Shirley attended Faith Temple Gospel Church and Living Word Faith Center and was a Certified Nurse Assistant for 29-years. She enjoyed flower gardening, shopping, and spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren.

Susie Gleen York, 77, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Saturday, November 26, 2022 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset, KY. She was born on January 15, 1945 in Russell Springs, KY, a daughter of the late Ben Barnett and Josie Simpson Barnett.
 
Susie was a former employee of Sutton's Shirt Factory and a member of Greater Hope Christian Fellowship Church. 
 
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her special friend, Edward Powell; a grandson, Logan York; 2 brothers: Leon Barnett and James Barnett; and 2 sisters: Shirley Gillian and Earlene Richardson.

Robert Earl Garmon, 70, of Columbia, KY passed away Friday, November 25, 2022, at The Medical Center at Bowling Green. He was born on August 30, 1952 in Hinsdale, IL to the late Owen and Flossie Hill Garmon.
 
Mr. Garmon attended the Church of the Nazarene in Columbia and enjoyed listen to music, playing guitar and spending time with family and friends.

WALTER TOMMY LOBB, 89, GREEN COUNTY, KY

 

Walter Tommy Lobb, 89, of Green County, KY, son of the late Cecil Hudson Lobb and Zelda Mae Milby Lobb, was born November 9, 1933 and departed this life on Thursday, November 24, 2022. 

 

He had made a profession of faith in Christ and attended the Nazarene Church. He was a veteran of the Korean War having served in the United States Navy and worked for Caterpillar Industries as a machinist for 30 years.

 

He united in marriage to Jeanne Eleanor Lobb on December 11, 1981 who preceded him in death on November 23, 2020.

PHILLIP BAILEY, 65, COLUMBIA, KY

 

Phillip A. Bailey, 65, of Columbia, KY died Thursday, November 24, 2022 at 1:01 P.M. at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset. He was born August 14, 1957 in Adair County.
 

Preceding him in death was his father, James Bailey and his first wife, Theresa McLean Bailey.

 

Phillip started his career in the Emergency Medical Services as an EMT with Adair County Ambulance Service. He moved to Pinellas County, Florida, where he worked in the Emergency Medical Services, spending 22 years with Largo Fire Rescue, retiring as Lieutenant.  He also was an instructor at the National Fire Academy and St. Petersburg College. After retirement, he moved back to Columbia and joined the Columbia-Adair County Volunteer Fire Department and attended Trinity United Methodist Church.

RAYMOND JOSEPH STAPLETON, 89, COLUMBIA, KY


Raymond Joseph Stapleton, 89, of Columbia, KY died Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at his residence. He was born in Knifley, KY on March 15, 1933 to the late Jackson Robert “Rob” and Maude Ella Watson Stapleton. 

 

Mr. Stapleton attended the Mt. Olive Baptist Church and was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army. He was a retired Diesel Mechanic and enjoyed buying and flipping houses. He was an outdoorsman that enjoyed hunting, fishing and doing yard work.

ALMA LOIS CONNER, 79, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY

 

Alma Lois Conner, 79, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2022 at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset.  She was born June 1, 1943 in Russell Springs, the daughter of the late Forest and Ona West Russell. 
 

She was a woman of deep faith who loved her Lord and her family. Lois’ life revolved around her family. She was well known for her seamstress handiwork and had her own quilting and alterations business. Lois attended Heritage Hope Church of God in Somerset for many years.

LINDA GRANT KESSLER, 72, COLUMBIA, KY


Linda Grant Kessler, 72, of the Portland community in Adair County, died Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at 8:04 P.M. at U.K. Bluegrass Hospice Care Center in Lexington. She was born July 20, 1950 in Adair County to the late Lucy Geraldine Davidson Grant and Hershel Grant.

 

Linda was an active member of Columbia Church of Christ, former member of the Portland Homemakers and was well known in the community for her wedding cakes, birthday cakes and whatever occasion a cake was needed. She was a retired educator, teaching for the Adult Education Program and for 30 years taught in the Math Department at Lindsey Wilson College.  She loved her students and they loved the influence she had on their lives.

Roger was of the Methodist faith, a member of Marrowbone United Methodist church, a farmer, trucker, and heavy equipment operator.

Phyllis Ann Huckaby, 82, of Russell Springs, KY died Tuesday, November 22, 2022 at Russell County Hospital. She was born September 12, 1940 in Oneida, Tennessee to the late Othel and Mamie Baltimore Coffey. 

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Larry D. Huckaby in 2015. 

 

Phyllis was a member of Russell Springs Christian Church and retired as Manager of First Federal Savings & Loan in Jamestown.

Mitzi Bault, 65, of Columbia, KY died Monday, November 21, 2022 at her home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born February 2, 1957 in Adair County. 
 

Mitzi formerly owned Rainbows and Lollipops Daycare and Mitzi’s on the Square. She was a member of Charity Baptist Church.

 

Preceding her in death was her father, L.G. “Peanut” McKinley; her son, Stewart Grant; and her sister, Marcia Cook.

Donnie Ralph Irwin, 73, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Saturday, November 19, 2022 at his home. He was born August 21, 1949 in Clinton County, KY, the son of the late Shelby and Margie Glover Irwin. 
 
Donnie was a former tool & die machinist. He was an avid UofL Cardinals fan and enjoyed watching NASCAR. Donnie was of the Christian faith. 
 
In addition to his parents, Donnie was preceded in death by his daughter, Sondra Harris and an infant brother, Frankie Irwin.

Theresa was a long time restaurant employee at Arby's of Russell Springs and a homemaker.

Shelby Andrew Coffey, 74, of Jamestown, KY passed away Monday, November 21, 2022 at Russell County Hospital. He was born on November 1, 1948 in Glasgow, KY, the son of the late Liston Coffey and Dorothy Rabon Alexander.
 
He was a faithful member of Jamestown Christian Church and was well known to the people in Jamestown and loved everybody.

Troy David Pollard, 52, of Columbia, KY passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2022 at Norton Hospital in Louisville, KY. He was born in Adair County on July 8, 1970 to the late Ronnie and Ruby Taylor Pollard.
 
Troy was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Debra  Ann Jones, 67, of Jamestown, KY passed away Saturday, November 19, 2022 at Russell County Hospital. She was born in Appleton, WI on September 6, 1955, a daughter of the late Rose Mary (Holihan) and Butch Simon.
 
Debra served in the U.S. Army.

David Ray Hawkins, 46, of Hodgenville, KY passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2022 at his home. He was born September 18, 1976 in Monticello, KY, a son of the late Joyce Hawkins Back. 
 
David was a former pet groomer. He was truly a people person and loved his family. David enjoyed being outdoors, whether he was hunting, fishing, or camping at the Rockhouse. 
 
In addition to his mother, David was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Hawkins.

Loretta Wells, 79, of Jamestown, KY passed away Wednesday, November 16th, at Russell County Hospital, Russell Springs, KY. She was born in Jamestown, KY on December 4, 1942, a daughter of the late Nora (Knight) and Harvey Lawless.

She worked at Brockway Glass for 15 years and retired from RCA records. Loretta loved bowling in her younger days and won many trophies, she enjoyed playing cards and games, doing crossword puzzles and she had a very competitive spirit, she also loved to go fishing and working in her garden. She was an excellent cook and was known for her fried apple pies and brownies.

Bro. Willard Lee Bryant, 73, of Columbia, KY passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2022 at his residence with his family by his side. He was born in Adair County on July 30, 1949 to the late Drurry and Frances Grider Bryant.

 

Bro. Bryant was a member and Assistant Pastor of Fairview Separate Baptist Church and former Pastor of Ono Community Church and Royville Community Church. Willard was a 39-year member and former treasurer of Hood Masonic Lodge #839 and an avid Knife collector and trader. He also enjoyed farming and spending time with his family and friends.

JUNE JACQUELINE POPPLEWELL GASKINS, 98, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY


June Jacqueline Popplewell Gaskins, 98, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2022 at Russell County Hospital. She was born in Anderson, Indiana on June 20, 1924, a daughter of the late Orion Avalee and Josephine Anderson Popplewell. 
 

On June 21, 1941 at the age of 17, she married Morris M. Gaskins, the beginning of a 53-year union of marriage and work for the Lord. June was a dutiful and devoted pastor’s wife. During Bro. Morris’ pastoring career, she was active in music, with the children’s choir, Bible Schools and revivals in their tenures at Science Hill First Baptist Church, Clear Fork Baptist Church, in Albany, and Union Baptist Church of Russell Springs. She was a member of Russell Springs First Baptist Church. June was an accomplished piano player; she played for the Starlighters Quartet that was featured daily on CBS radio. She shared her talent by teaching piano privately to many students over the years. June was a public school teacher and had worked for the telephone company.

Ollace was a retired truck driver with Ryder Trucking Company. He attended Bethel United Baptist Church. He enjoyed woodworking and was a car enthusiast.

Debra Lynn “Debbie” Shearer, 63, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset. She was born December 2, 1958 in Louisville, KY, daughter of the late Albert and Ethel Mae Sharp Shepherd. 
 

She worked for several years at Fair Oak Nursing and Rehabilitation in Jamestown.  Debbie stayed busy working all the time, as long as her health allowed. In later years, every chance of a day off, Debbie would take her family out to eat. She loved being with her kids and grandkids.

DANNY LEE BURTON, 76, COLUMBIA, KY

 

Danny Lee Burton, 76, was born August 31,1946 in Adair County, KY to the late Willie C. and Virginia C. Burton. He passed away on November 14, 2022 in Columbia, KY.

 

Danny graduated from Adair County High School in 1966 and moved to Indiana where he worked at several jobs including Cummins in Columbus for many years. Danny’s love for music started at a very young age. He spent lots of time at his best friend (Reed Hancock) home. Reed’s uncle, Boyd, played the guitar and taught Dan the basics. Dan’s uncle, Roy, taught and played music with Dan when he would come to Kentucky from Indiana. Danny enjoyed spending time at his sister’s horse farms and going to Louisville Downs to watch the horse races and meet up with his dad and brother. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family and friends.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Stacy Burton.

Danny Moore, 83, of Campbellsville, KY (formerly of Columbia), died Monday, November 14, 2022 in Green County, KY. He was born April 30, 1939 in Adair County to the late Lawrence and Terri Hayes Moore.

 

Danny started as a deliverer for Chappel’s Dairy and retired after 44 years as Plant Manager for Flav-O-Rich. He was a member of Kellyville Community Church and a U.S. Army Veteran.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Phyllis Burton Moore, in 2016.

Robert “Rabbit” Hare, 40, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Thursday, November 10, 2022 at Russell County Hospital.  He was born December 2, 1981 to David and Betty Popplewell Hare, the second baby ever born at Russell County Hospital.  
 
He was a U.S. Army veteran who served in Baghdad at the fall of Suddam Hussein. Robert attended Liberty Baptist Church. He loved to go fishing and loved camping.
 
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, A.B. Hare and his maternal grandmother, Rose Popplewell.

Allan Miller, 49, was born March 15, 1973 in Frankfort, KY to Paul and Paula Miller and departed this life on August 13, 2022 in Dayton, Ohio.

 

He graduated from Adair County High School in 1991 and joined the United States Air Force and retired after 20 years of service.

 

He was preceded in death by father, Paul Miller, on March 16, 2018.

Geraldine Grant, 90, of Columbia, KY died Sunday, November 6, 2022 at 11:45 A.M. at Summit Manor Nursing Home. She was born February 4, 1932 in Celina, Tennessee, to the late Lester G. and Mary Lura Watson Davidson. 

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Harold Davidson.

 

She was a loving Christian mother, a long-time member of Columbia Church of Christ and retired from the Adair County School System.  She is remembered for working in the lunchroom at John Adair Elementary School.

Darrell Wayne Turner, 46, of Campbellsville, KY died Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 2:50 P.M. at his mother’s residence after a short illness. He was born August 7, 1976 in Columbia, KY. 

 

He was preceded in death by his father, Tommy Turner and his step-father, Tony Lewis.

 

Darrell worked in the food service industry, working at Zaxby’s in Glasgow and more recently at Medco Center in Campbellsville. He loved the outdoors, camping, enjoyed Christmas, giving the most unique gifts, and just loved being around his family and friends.

Larry was a former employee of the Cudahy Cheese Company. He was known as a hard worker and enjoyed talking on the CB radio, where his handle was “Coon Hunter.” Larry was an avid fisherman and coon hunter.

Nancy Elizabeth Grider, 80, of Columbia, KY passed away on Thursday, November 3, 2022 at the Medical Center at Bowling Green. She was born on July 26, 1942 in Adair County to the late Walter and Ada Loy Yarberry.

 

Mrs. Grider was a member of the Freedom Separate Baptist Church and recently attended Bethlehem Separate Baptist Church. She was a former employee of Osh Kosh in Columbia and dairy farmed with her husband for many years. Nancy enjoyed spending time with family and friends, but especially enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren.

Myrtie Kerns McGowan, 79, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at her home. She was born at home on Beckham Ridge on February 9, 1943, a daughter of the late William Dewey and Laura Bricken Burton. 
 

She retired after 30 years with the Russell County Board of Education, serving most of those years as cook in the Russell Springs Elementary kitchen. Myrtie excelled at cooking and was known for her biscuits. She enjoyed her flowers, reading Amish books and visiting the Amish community.  Myrtie and her husband, John, attended Mt. Calvary Baptist Church on Damron Creek.

Mary Irene Miller Walker Nell, 107, of Columbia, KY, resident of Frankfort, KY, passed on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at her daughter’s residence in Frankfort, KY. She was born in Crocus, KY on July 24, 1915, the daughter of the late Laura Willis and Adam Albert Miller.


A member of the Columbia Baptist Church for over 50 years, Irene moved to Frankfort to live with her daughter in 2007 and regularly attended Crestwood Baptist Church in Frankfort until a year ago. Irene and her husband Bill owned and ran Nell’s Variety Store on the Square in Columbia, KY for 28 years.

 

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by the following siblings: Albert Adam Miller II, Ella Wilkerson Hill, Edwin Miller, Mildred Darnell, Nancy Smith, Helen Barth, Reed Miller, Sam Miller, and Charles Miller; husbands: John Ritchie Walker and Willie Lile “Bill” Nell and a son, David Lee Walker.
