Rena C. Woodruff, 74, of Jamestown, KY passed away Monday, November 29, 2021 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville, KY. She was born in Science Hill, KY on April 10, 1947.
 
Rena worked as a secretary before retirement.

HAROLD DEAN NIX, 81, BRIDGEVIEW, ILLINOIS

 

Harold Dean Nix, 81, of Bridgeview, IL died Monday, November 29, 2021 in Chicago, IL. Born September 19, 1940 in McDowell County, NC to the late Frank and Callie Geneva (Davidson) Nix.  


He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia (Loy); his son, Brian Scott; his siblings: 5 brothers: Virgil, Dan, Lawrence, Don, and Mike Nix; and 2 sisters: Lois Nix and Mary McCloud.

Dean followed the great migration north in his late teens to Boston, and later on to Chicago looking for work. He built his life and family in Chicago, but always loved returning “down home” to visit.  He was most proud of his family and the many travels he experienced in his lifetime.

CHRISTOPHER GLENN COFFEY, 38, JAMESTOWN, KY


Christopher Glenn Coffey, 38, of Jamestown, KY passed away on Friday, November 26, 2021. He was born in Somerset on June 28, 1983, the son of the late Donnie and Peggy Smith Coffey (who survives). 
 

He was a truck driver who learned to drive while riding with and driving for his dad. Although he would spend weeks at a time on the road with his dad, Christopher was definitely a “Mama’s boy”. He had spent over 15 years on the road, most recently with Core-Trans Trucking. Christopher enjoyed group calls with his fellow truck drivers while they would all be on the road away from home. He liked to do mechanic projects in his spare time. Christopher was a good-hearted man with a kind soul.

Sheila Ellen Carter, 61, of Burnside, KY died Saturday, November 27, 2021 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset, KY.  She was born on February 22, 1960 in Columbia, KY to the late Walter Beckham Adamson, Jr. and Eva Ellen Knight Adamson.  
 
Mrs. Carter was of the Christian faith and enjoyed crafting, cooking, sewing, painting and spending time with her family and friends.
 
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Walter “Waldo” Adamson.

He was a Computer Tech.

Kimberly Stargel, 61, of Columbia, KY died Monday, November 22, 2021 at her home. She was born January 2, 1960 in Cincinnati, OH to the late Alfred Ray McFarland and Janine Robinson who survives. 
 

Kim was a homemaker.

Sandra Kay Dyer Spears, 67, of Breeding, KY, with her unfaltering faith in God and her family by her side, lost her long battle with cancer and departed this life on Thursday, November 25, 2021 in Glasgow, KY. A native of Adair County, she was born on February 21, 1954 to the late Herman Dyer and Cassie Lou Riley Dyer of Breeding.
 
Sandra was a retired factory worker, having spent most of her life working in clothing manufacturing and taking care of her family.

MORRIS K. ROY, 72, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY

 
Morris K. Roy, 72, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at his residence. He was born on May 7, 1949 in Somerset, KY, the son of the late Omer Roy and Edna Gosser Roy
.
He was a farmer, a Veteran of the United States Army serving in Vietnam in the 11th U.S. Armored Cavalry Regiment. Morris served as a tank commander in which he was in charge of his tank and his men on the tank. Morris served our country with honor and valor receiving the Green Army Commendation Medal, the Purple Heart, the Army Good Conduct Medal and considerable more medals. He was also a member of Pine Grove United Baptist Church. 
 
In addition to his mother and father he was preceded in death by 2 brothers: Donald and Harold Roy.

Leonard Howard “Peck” Reliford, 91, of Columbia, KY passed away on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at Taylor County Hospital. Peck was born on November 14, 1930 in Adair County, KY to the late Jim and Aina Kemp Reliford.
 

He was a retired farmer, a member of the former Pleasant Ridge United Methodist Church and attended Jones Chapel Church.

Kathy Jo Powell, 62, of Columbia, KY died Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at the Hosparus Inpatient Unit in Louisville. She was born January 11, 1959, in Clarksville, Indiana, to the late Robert and Jo Ann Orman Galloway. 

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Dale Powell on January 22, 2021, a son, Zach Powell and her step-father, Ted Fowler.

BETTY ANN BRUTON BROWN, 82, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY


Betty Ann Bruton Brown, 82, of Jamestown, KY and formerly of Columbia, KY died Monday, November 22, 2021 at her residence.  She was born in Cumberland County, KY on August 7, 1939 to the late Kelly Paul and Flossie Shelley Bruton.

 

Betty graduated from Adair County High School and then Lindsey Wilson College in 1960. She had 35 years of service as an Administrative Assistant to the President at Lindsey Wilson College. She was an over 50 year member of Trinity United Methodist Church. After moving to Jamestown, KY to be near their family, they joined the First Baptist Church of Russell Springs. She enjoyed anything involving her grandchildren, she was their biggest supporter. She loved her family and church. She was a wonderful cook and used that gift to bless many, many people over the years.

Valeria Godby, 96, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Sunday, November 21, 2021, at Russell County Hospital. Born on April 5, 1925 in the Pine Top Community of Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Willard “Perk” and Vida Dause Owens.  

 

Valeria was a homemaker and a pastor’s wife for 42 years. She was a member of Good Tidings Baptist Church.

 

In addition to her parents, Valeria was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Hoyt Godby, who passed away May 7, 1994; six brothers; and one sister.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry R. Bretz in 2017; her parents; a son, Gary R. Kathryn Faye Carnes, 69, of Jamestown, KY passed away Friday, November 19, 2021 at her residence. She was born in Indianapolis, IN on November 22, 1951, a daughter of the late Edna (Aynes) and Gordon Acton. 

She worked as a nursing assistant at Fair Oaks Health and Rehabilitation for many years.

Ruth Evelyn Stearns, 62, of Columbia, KY died Saturday, November 20, 2021 at T. J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow, KY. She was born in Louisville, KY on April 3, 1959 to the late James Martin and Vernie Mae Bushong Branham.

 

Ms. Stearns was of the Christian faith and enjoyed caring for her grandchildren, listening to gospel music and flower gardening.

RUSS MCGAHA, 90, COLUMBIA, KY


Russell McGaha, 90, of Columbia, KY died Saturday, November 20, 2021 at his daughter’s residence in Campbellsville, KY.  He was born in Adair County, KY on November 17, 1931 to the late Curtis and Bessie Holt McGaha.
 

In addition to his parents, Russell was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Maxine McGaha and 5 siblings: Edith Tuttle, Calvin McGaha, Lyda Holt, Tommy Martin and Alene Wilson.

 

Mr. McGaha was a member of the New Hope Separate Baptist Church and a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army. He was a former Goodyear Tire Dealer in Columbia, worked at Fruit of the Loom and Westlake Regional Hospital. He was proud of his service to his country and a very patriotic man. He collected Mopar vehicles and enjoyed reading.

Patricia Faye Darnell, 64, of Columbia, KY died Friday, November 19, 2021 at Taylor Regional Hospital in Campbellsville, KY.  She was born in Adair County, KY on November 4, 1957 to the late Edwin Paul Vanarsdale and Dorothy Montgomery Vanarsdale of Columbia, KY who survives.

 

Pat attended Trinity United Methodist Church and enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family and friends.  She was a giving and caring soul that always had a smile on her face. Her greatest love was being “Nana” to her grandchildren and all of their friends.

Margaret worked as a waitress before retiring.

Madonna Sue LeMaster Hawkins, 87, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Friday, November 19, 2021 at Fair Oaks Health and Rehabilitation in Jamestown, KY. Born on July 18, 1934 in Grayson, KY, she was the daughter of Clifford Raymond and Millie Fuller LeMaster. 
 
Sue retired from Fair Oaks after working there many years as a med tech. She enjoyed spending time sewing, quilting, and knitting. Sue also enjoyed taking trips and would travel every time she got a chance. She was a wonderful person that truly loved her family. Sue was a member of Living Stone Church.
 
In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by two husbands: Kenneth Vicory and Everett Hawkins; a beloved friend, Donald L. Rhoades; one daughter, Arlene Hawkins; two sisters: Judy Gail Mathews and Pamela Robinson; three grandchildren: Timothy Wayne Hosack, Robert Allan Hawkins and Richard Lee Jamesand a great-grandchild, Jay Sparks.

Stephen Edward Absher, 44, of Columbia, KY died Thursday, November 18, 2021 at his home. He was born January 26, 1977 in Adair County, KY.

 

Stephen was a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints. 
 

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Edward Absher.

Glenn Reeves, 80, of Glasgow, KY passed away on Wednesday, November 17, 2021. He was born to the late Richmond Buford “Banty” Reeves and Alma Young Reeves of Columbia, KY in 1941.
 
Glenn graduated from Adair County High School in 1960. He worked as a builder for nearly 40 years and was an active member of Glasgow Cumberland Presbyterian Church for over 50 years where he served as an elder. Glenn was an avid outdoorsman and long-time member of the Barren Bassmasters. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a collector of antique fishing lures.
 
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by 2 older brothers: Earl Dean Holt and Paul Reeves.

Mr. Brockman was a retired farmer and a member of Free Union Separate Baptist Church.

PHILLIP SHROYER, 84, GULFPORT, MS

 
Phillip M. Shroyer, 84, of Gulfport, Mississippi passed away on November 11, 2021 in Gulfport, MS. He was a resident of Gulfport since 2005.  
 
Mr. Shroyer received his bachelor’s degree from Western Kentucky University and his master’s degree from the University of Louisville. He was a 1st Lt. in the U.S. Army Artillery, from 1959 to 1966 and worked for the Veteran’s Administration. Mr. Shroyer was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church of America and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Gulfport.
 
Phillip was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice Jonson and Alberta Norene Tramp Shroyer; 2 sons: John Paxton Shroyer and Michael Phillip Shroyer; and a brother, Jon Roger Shroyer.

Clifton was employed by Campbellsville Industries. He enjoyed pistol target shooting and attended the National Shooting Championship every year.

RHONDA KAY WEST, 65, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY

 

Rhonda Kay West, 65, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset. She was born in Muncie, Indiana on December 9, 1955, a daughter of the late Henry Ed and Bonnie Sue Duddleston Withers.

 

After high school, Rhonda attended college and graduated from vocational school with her sewing machine mechanic license. She soon after became head mechanic at Lakeland Manufacturing in Columbia, KY. Rhonda spent time working as a truck driver and route salesperson for the Columbia Candy Company, then worked for H & R Block doing tax preparation. She had continued doing taxes for herself for 30 years.

 

Rhonda married Gary “Randy” West on September 13, 1974, at First Baptist Church of Russell Springs (now Liberty Baptist Church) with Bro. Gilbert Sapp officiating. The couple has worked side by side in their own concession business since 1994. Their business, Zakks Snacks, would travel all around Kentucky, working different festivals and events. Rhonda liked to be on the go. She loved doing stuff outside and spending time with family. Rhonda always looked forward to holiday meals with family.

 

Along with her parents, Rhonda was preceded by her brother, Kem Withers, who passed away in infancy.

Peggy Janis Holt, 84, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Friday, November 12, 2021 at Greenview Regional Hospital in Bowling Green. She was born in Russell County on September 25, 1937, a daughter of the late Robert “Bert” and Tressie Anderson Bottom.  
 
Janis was a sweet, generous Christian lady who was known to have given the coat off her back.  Janis was loved by everyone who met her, especially children. She would always have a house full of children, most being someone else’s. Kids wanted to spend their snow days and summer’s off from school days at her home. Janis loved all of her family deeply.
 
Along with her parents, Janis was preceded in death by 3 brothers: Raymond Bottom, Veston “Bocky” Bottom and William “Billy” Bottom; her niece, Sandra Miller; and her former husband and father to her children, Kenneth Leon Holt.

ALICE MARIE STEPHENS, 83, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY

 

Alice Marie Stephens, 83, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Friday, November 12, 2021 at Fair Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility. Born July 7, 1938 in Jabez, KY, Marie was the daughter of the late John Wiley and Ermine Roy Chumbley.  
 
She worked for Russell Sportswear, then at Fruit of the Loom for over 15 years. She worked at different restaurants in the Russell Springs and Jamestown areas, her last job being for Lee’s Famous Recipe, in Jamestown. Marie was one of the best cooks and was great at working with her hands. She won prizes at the Russell County Fair for her works in sewing, quilting, and embroidering. Marie enjoyed canning and working in her flowers.
 
She was of the Pentecostal Belief and had attended Calvary Temple Church with her family for many years. Marie later attended Parks Ridge Church of God with her siblings. In most recent years, she went to 910 Full Gospel Church with her sister and niece.
 
Along with her parents, Marie was preceded in death by 3 brothers: Ernest Chumbley, Arlis Chumbley and Carlus Chumbley; and 6 sisters: Helen Oakes, Betty Bunch, Goldie McQueary, Velna Oakes, Lorene Popplewell and Dortha Hopper.

She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. Being born to a father who was a Methodist minister and a mother who was a piano music teacher, Frances loved church activities, playing the piano, and singing both with her immediate family and friends.

THOMAS POPPLEWELL, 75, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY


Thomas Popplewell, 75, of Russell Springs, KY passed away at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Tennessee on Tuesday, November 9, 2021.  He was born on August 29, 1946 in Russell County, a son the late Farris and Zilma McQueary Popplewell. 
 

Tommy was a welder for over 43 years, initially working at Learsiegler and then for Tarter Gate Company for 35 years. He enjoyed working on lawn mowers and boat motors, but his favorite pastime was fishing. Tommy was a member of Square Oak Separate Baptist Church where he attended services as long as he was able to do so. He was a very kind and caring man who loved his family. Tommy will be missed by all who were blessed to know his humble spirit and quiet, soft-spoken voice.

GARY D. MARVIN, 81, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY

 

Gary D. Marvin, 81, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Monday, November 8, 2021 at Russell County Hospital in Russell Springs. Born April 27, 1940 in St. Clair, MI, he was the son of Wayne and Daisy (Isaac) Marvin, the 10th of 12 children. 
 
As an entrepreneur and talented “Jack of All Trades”, he started his own auto collision repair shop and nursery/landscaping businesses. A rebel in his early years, he enjoyed racing snowmobiles and motorcycles; but his true passions included country dancing, home construction, and designing and building the myriad of projects his creative mind could dream up - new designs for snowmobiles, motorcycles, trucks, boats, and even highway billboards. Later in life, he fabricated both wood and aluminum boats and traveled the Midwest, Southern, and Eastern U.S. waterways, in his truly unique houseboat designed to navigate rough waters … a trip chronicled in the Houseboat Magazine article “The Great Circle”. His most recent project completed just this year was a 34’ houseboat he designed and built with his son.
 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Marvin and a daughter, Tanya Marvin.

CHESTER "C.L." SAYERS, 88, WINDSOR, KY

 
Chester “C.L.” Sayers, 88, of Windsor, KY passed away on Monday, November 8, 2021 at Russell County Hospital. Born in Casey County on September 6, 1933, he was a son of the late Hershel and Mattie Watson Sayers.  
 
At age 17, he married his sweetheart, Jerrene Brockman, in Jamestown. C.L. never worked a public job, he farmed for himself all his life. C.L. was never a fan of winter, because there was nothing for him to farm. When he was 44 years old, his and Jerrene’s daughter wed, they took her husband as their own son and worked many hard years together.  When his grandsons came along, they learned to farm as their grandfather and father did. C.L. loved the Lord and was a long-time member of Cedar Springs Church.  He was known to do anything to help anybody in need, no matter what.
 
Along with his parents, C.L. was preceded in death by his wife of over 57 years, Jerrene, who he has missed every day since her death on March 13, 2010; three brothers: Wayne Sayers, Jesse Sayers, and Eugene Sayers; two sisters: Olene Johnson and Patricia Sayers; and his great-granddaughter, Caroline Grace Wilson.

Deliah Frost, 90, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset. She was born in Russell County on September 23, 1931, a daughter of the late John Roe and Ethel Floyd Frost.  

 

She made her home in Ohio for many years, then came back to Russell County to work at and retire from Fruit of the Loom, of Jamestown. Deliah loved being outdoors and would start her mornings with a walk outside. She loved her log cabin in Russell Springs and enjoyed gardening, working with her flowers and crocheting. Delilah attended 3Trees Church.

Delmas Landon Coomer, 85, of the Millerfield community of Adair County, died Friday, November 5, 2021 at his home. He was born September 14, 1936 in the Morris Chapel community of Adair County to the late Rachel Marie Gibson Coomer and Freeman Coomer. 

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Wilson; one sister, Matra Wissing; two brothers: Forbes and Leon Coomer; and a grandchild, Brandon Coomer.

 

Landon was united in marriage to Judy Stone on April 1, 1960.  He worked for many years at the Cudahy Cheese Plant in Russell Springs and dairy farmed.  His favorite hobby was coon hunting with walker dogs.  He attended the Millerfield Brethren-in-Christ Church since 1970.

Donald Gene Burton, 79, of Columbia, KY died Wednesday, November 3, 2021 at his residence.  He was born in Adair County, KY on March 16, 1942 to the late Zack and Emma Susan Willis Burton. 

 

Mr. Burton was a member of the Bloomington Chapel Brethren in Christ Church, a former employee of the Adair County Jail and a veteran of the U.S. Army.  He enjoyed junking and antiques and always finding or making a good deal.

CALVIN LEE BROWN, 73, COLUMBIA, KY

 

Calvin Lee Brown, 73, of Columbia, KY died Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at his home. He was born August 7, 1948 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Calvin Sylvanius and Joan Wethington Brown. 

 

Calvin served his country during the Vietnam War in the U.S. Marines, was a former officer with the Sheridan Police Department and Hamilton County Sheriff Department, a Life Member of the V.F.W. and American Legion.

CHRISTINE RICE, 85, COLUMBIA, KY

 

Christine Rice, 85, of Columbia, KY died Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at T.J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow. She was born September 16, 1936 in Adair County to the late Robert Twyman and Annie Pearl Keltner Baker.  

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George M. Rice on December 23, 2020; two sons: Gregory H. Caldwell and Ricky N. Caldwell; 1 grandchild, Joshua Roche; 3 brothers: Odell, Dillon and Alfred Baker; and a sister, Rebecca Parson.

 

Christine was a member of Charity Baptist Church and retired from Osh Kosh B’Gosh.

Gary Thomas Newton, 56, of Liberty, KY passed away on Monday, November 1, 2021 in Somerset, KY.  Born August 21, 1965 in Lebanon, KY, he was a son of the late Burl Gorden Newton and Linda Faye “Judy” Wethington Newton.
 
Gary was a gate hauler. He enjoyed camping, bonfires, playing cards, cookouts, traveling with his dog Tucker, and fishing. Gary loved spending time with his family and friends.

Glen Allen Oaks, 86, of Russell Springs, KY, passed away Sunday, October 31st, at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, Somerset, KY. He was born in Jamestown, KY on July 19, 1935, a son of the late Lillie (Hayes) and Claude Oaks.
 
Glen was a member of Mt Pleasant United Methodist Church, served in the U.S. Marines, and was a carpenter for many years.
 
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his grandparents: Walter (Trigger) and Maude Oaks; 2 brothers: Jack Oaks and Jerry Mack Oaks and a sister, Darlene Ash.

EUGENE PELSTON, 45, GLASGOW, KY (ADAIR COUNTY NATIVE)

 
Eugene Pelston, 45, of Glasgow, KY (formerly of the Sparksville Community of Adair County), the son of Sue (Fudge) Pelston of Sparksville and the late George Pelston, was born December 19, 1975 in Columbia and departed this life on Friday, October 29, 2021 in Glasgow at the T.J. Samson Community Hospital. 
 
Eugene had made a profession of faith in Christ and was of the Baptist Faith. He was a factory worker for Akebono Brake in Glasgow at the time of his death. He enjoyed riding four wheelers and motorcycles, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing Xbox, and farming Simulator games, but most of all, spending time with his family, especially his grandson.

Virginia Combest, 90, of Jamestown, KY passed away Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Grandview Nursing and Rehab in Campbellsville, KY. She was born in Jamestown, KY on October 7, 1931, a daughter of the late Dora (Lee) and Johnny Polston.

 

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, John Duel Combest and a brother, Tommy Polston.

JOSEPH SPARKS, 78, BREEDING, KY

 

Joseph E. Sparks, 78, of Breeding, KY died September 7, 2021 at the Harrison Springs Health Campus in Corydon, Indiana. He was born August 22, 1943 to the late J.E. and Christine Sparks.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Dudley Sparks.

 

He was a retired Hardin County High School Chemistry teacher and a Microbiologist for the state of Kentucky. Joe’s father, J.E. Sparks, along with Frank Lancaster and others, were founding members of the Duo-County Telephone Co-Op and at the time of Joe’s death, he was the oldest member of the Board of Directors. Joe was a World War II Historian, avid duck and turkey hunter, along with his friend Jimmy Nell, and past President of Kentucky League of Sportsmen.
