JAMES BOLIN "JIM" BEARD, 79, LOUISVILLE, KY

 

James Bolin “Jim” Beard, 79, of Louisville, KY died Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at the V.A. Hospital in Louisville, KY. He was born in Columbia, KY on July 30, 1942 to the late John H. and Dorothy Bailey Beard.

 

Mr. Beard was of the Baptist faith and retired from the U. S. Army.  He served during the Vietnam War and received many awards including a Bronze Star and Purple Heart.  He was a member of the VFW Post 6097 and was a Kentucky Colonel.

Lucas David Smith, 50, of Lexington, KY died Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington. He was born April 9, 1971 in Goldsboro, North Carolina to the late Donnie D. and JoAnne Furkins Smith.

Mary Sue Young, 67, of Russell Springs, KY died Thursday, December 30, 2021 at her residence. She was born in Gallatin, TN on January 31, 1954 to the late Clyde and Agnes Marie Chandler Reecer.  
 
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Earl Young, Jr. and 3 siblings: Julia White, Johnny Reecer and Charles Reecer.

Sue Carol Gossage, 77, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at Russell County Hospital.  She was born October 10, 1944 in Greenwood, Indiana, a daughter of the late Dorothy Watters Manuel.  
 
Sue enjoyed gardening, working in her flowers and her dogs. She loved spending time with her family.

Twana Lee Hadley, 67, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Wednesday December 29, 2021 at Fair Oaks Health and Rehabilitation in Jamestown. Born  July 17, 1954 in Danville, KY, she was a daughter of the late Kenneth and Vircena Stephens Hadley.
 
Twana was a member of Cedar Springs Baptist Church. She had a love for dogs and horses.

Kaylee Tennison Frost, 28, of Hodgenville, KY (formerly of Columbia, KY) died Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, KY. She was born in Glasgow, KY on May 6, 1993 to Terry and Sherry Phillips of Columbia, KY who survives.
 
Kaylee was a member of the Emory Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a 2011 graduate of Adair County High School and a graduate of Lindsey Wilson College with a Master’s Degree in Mental Health. She specialized in children’s counseling and was passionate about her work. She enjoyed being outdoors and gardening with her mom, Sherry, and spending time with her family and friends.

James Lewis “Jim” Clark, 57, of Columbia, KY died Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at 6:05 A.M. at his home. He was born November 23, 1964 in Adair County. 

 

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, who raised him: Johnny Golden and Hazel Kemp Clark; his mother, Linda Clark Beard; and a brother, Tim Beard.  

 

Jim was a member of Pollards Chapel United Methodist Church and a sawmill worker.

PINKIE BURTON LEE, 87, CINCINNATI, OHIO (ADAIR COUNTY NATIVE)


Pinkie Burton Lee, 87, of Cincinnati, OH passed away Sunday, December 26, 2021. She was born in Columbia, Kentucky on June 14, 1934 to the late Willie James and Nancy Jane Burton (nee McQueary).
 

Pinkie’s family meant the world to her, and she devoted her entire life to them. She always considered everyone family and never met a stranger. She was always thought of as the neighborhood mom and grandma and never treated anyone any different. Her door was always open and she always welcomed you with her huge infectious smile. Anyone that knew her knew she had such a big heart; to know her was to love her. Early in her life she worked as a laborer at P&G, but her greatest accomplishment was being a homemaker. Pinkie was an avid bingo player and loved listening to her family singing gospel music.

BISHOP BILLY RAY PAYNE, 79, COLUMBIA, KY

 

Bishop Billy Ray Payne, 79, of Columbia, KY transitioned peacefully from this life on December 26, 2021 to his heavenly home. He left behind an enduring legacy as a devoted husband, father, Christian, and philanthropist. He was born in the family home on June 16, 1942 to William and Lucinda Christine (Williams) Payne in the Neatsville community of Adair County, KY.
 

His family later moved to the Sparksville community. He attended Adair County public schools and worked on the family farm until moving to Chicago as a young man. 
 

In 1971, Billy met Beverly Pollard in Indianapolis, Indiana at the Virginia Grill, where she was a waitress and he was a cook. He knew from the moment he saw her flowing, long red hair that she would become his wife. True to his intuition, they married on January 3, 1972 and raised 11 children together. They celebrated 49 years of marriage and were just a few days shy of their 50th Golden Anniversary at the time of Billy’s passing.

 

Billy worked many years for RCA Company in Indianapolis. After moving back to Columbia in 2006, he began working for the Adair County Board of Education as a bus driver. His love of community and fellowman led Billy to work at the Adair County Animal Shelter, Goodwill Industries, and J.O.Y. Ministries. He also volunteered his time delivering food and goods to the elderly and those in need.

 

If he was not tinkering with his cars, watching basketball, or mowing the lawn, Billy was certain to share a good story of his life and faith. He considered himself a blessed man. He was a faithful servant to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He started his ministry at the Voice of Pentecost Church in Indianapolis in 1976 at the age of 34. After moving back to Columbia, Billy and Beverly began attending the Eunice Church of God, supported by Pastor Elder C.R. Payne.

 

Along with his parents, Billy was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph B. Payne, and a sister, Amanda Weathers.

Michael Allen Lacy, 65, of Columbia, KY died Friday, December 24, 2021 at Greenhill Rehabilitation and Care in Greensburg, KY. He was born on January 2, 1956 in Canton, IL to the late Orville and Pauline Maher Lacy.

 

Mr. Lacy was a truck driver and veteran of the U. S. Marines.  He enjoyed Fishing, riding motorcycles and camping.

Donald M. Bennett, 74, of Columbia, Kentucky, died Friday, December 24, 2021 at Green Hill Manor Nursing Home in Greensburg. He was born January 5, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois to the late William Zachary and Valtha Burbridge Bennett. 
 

Donald served his country during the Vietnam Era in the U.S. Army, was a member of Calvary Temple Church and a self-employed sign painter.

Beula Grant, 93, of Columbia, KY died Saturday, December 25, 2021 at Summit Manor Nursing Home in Columbia, KY.  She was born in Fairplay, KY on December 16, 1928 to the late Melvin and Laura Bell McInteer Earls. 

 

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Grant; 2 children: Sue Janes and Lonnie Grant; and 8 siblings: Reno Earls, Pearl Kelley, Zelma Watson, Basil Earls, Venus Earls, Refus Brock, Finis Earls and Medie Bishop.

 

Mrs. Grant was a member of the Amazing Grace Community Church. She enjoyed flower gardening and spending time with her family and friends.

Margaret Butler Wade, 76, of Elizabethtown, KY (formerly of Campbellsville, KY), daughter of the late Josh Butler and Ruby Abston Grider, was born March 14, 1945 in Adair County, KY. She died at 7:42 P.M. on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 in Elizabethtown.  
 
She professed faith in Christ and was a member of Youngers Creek Baptist Church. Margaret was a former employee of Fruit of the Loom in Campbellsville and Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown. She was good spirited and kind hearted person. She enjoyed crafts, nature and bird watching. 
 
She united in marriage to Seth D. Wade June 7, 1964 and he preceded her in death November 8, 2015.
 
She was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Cravens.

LENA CORDELIA FORREST BROCKMAN, 91, COLUMBIA, KY


Lena Cordelia Forrest Brockman, 91, of Columbia, KY died Thursday, December 23, 2021 at her residence. She was born September 3, 1930 in Taylor County, KY to the late Alfred Lee and Maggie Belle Leonard Forrest.

 

Mrs. Brockman was a member of Knifley Christian Church. She was a retired educator in the Adair County School System. She retired from Knifley Grade Center where she spent the majority of her 32 ½  year career.  She began teaching in a one room school in Taylor County where she met her husband, William Aldus Brockman, whom she wed on December 22, 1950. Their marriage lasted 64 years until his death in March 2015.

 

Mrs. Brockman was a lifelong learner who enjoyed reading and traveling.  Her influence will impact her students lives for many years to come.  She was most proud of her family, loved her children and grandchildren and delighted in their accomplishments.

3 daughters: Janella (Carlos) Sullivan of Russell Springs, Inette Goodin of Columbia, Dr. Lavonne Brockman of Atlanta

ARVIN RAY WILSON, 78, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY

 

Arvin Ray Wilson, 78, fondly known as “Rabbit” since a boy, passed away on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at Russell County Hospital. He was born on August 31, 1943 in Russell County, a son of the late Avery and Flossie Frost Wilson. 

 

Arvin had been a cattle farmer all his adult life. He loved to farm, loved his cattle and loved going fishing.  Arvin was a faithful member of Pine Grove Separate Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and a Sunday School teacher. He adored his family; his wife, his daughters and his grandsons.

Just out of high school Danny worked with Dr. Grant, the local veterinarian. He then joined the Kentucky State Police and retired after 20+ years of service to the Commonwealth. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #722. He was a fun-loving family man that had a witty and charismatic personality. He enjoyed wood working.

Gary L. McCoy, 64, of Jamestown, KY passed away on Sunday, December 19, 2021 at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset. He was born September 23, 1957 in Phelps, KY, son of the late Joseph F. and Delores Gooslin McCoy.  
 
He married his sweetheart, Debbie Justice on July 12, 1974.

Gary was first and foremost a steadfast “Child of God”. He loved the Lord and his family with his whole heart. Gary enjoyed gardening, fishing, and hunting, but most of all, he loved his time spent with his family, laughing and worshipping the Lord.

Mr. West was a member of the Central Church of Christ and served as Minister of many churches in Ohio and Pennsylvania.  He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Ronald was retired from Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital as a registered respiratory therapist. He was also a hobby mechanic and enjoyed attending car shows. 
 
In addition to his parents, Ronald was preceded in death by one son, Craig Johnson; and 2 sisters: Euldean Brown and Delna Johnson.

Mike Allen Burton, 61, of Columbia, KY died Friday, December 17, 2021 from injuries sustained in an auto accident in Larue County.   He was born in Indianapolis, IN on October 24, 1960 to Nathaniel ‘Slick” Burton and the late Maydean Simpson Grant. 
 

He was also preceded in death by his step-father, Don Grant.

 

Mr. Burton attended the Bloomington Chapel Brethren in Christ Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mike enjoyed horseback riding, watching University of Kentucky basketball and was an avid Chicago Bears fan.

Martina Sue Burns, 43, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Thursday, December 16, 2021 at her home. She was born July 21, 1978 in Honolulu, Hawaii, a daughter of Martin Franklin, Sr. and Rosemary Bell Burns.  
 
She obtained her Registered Nurses Certificate and had worked as an independent call center contractor in recent years. Martina was a self-less person who would do anything for anyone in need. She had a “golden heart” and was content with living a simple life. She was a Godly woman who loved Jesus and her God. Martina was family oriented, was a caregiver to many of her family, and enjoyed spending time with them all. She was an animal lover who adored her dogs, Gizmo and Gunner.  
 
Martina was preceded in death by her father, Martin Franklin Burns, Sr.

Frances professed her faith in her savior Jesus Christ at a young age at Antioch United Methodist Church. She enjoyed cooking, flower gardening, being outdoors and spending time with her family and friends.

Mrs. Vanarsdale was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Columbia, KY and the Bliss Homemakers.  Dorothy was a great Christian lady that loved her church and loved spending time with her family and friends.

Ms. Heidi Ann Miller, 65 of Russell Springs, KY passed from this life on Monday, December 13, 2021 at Rockcastle Regional Hospital. She was born in Hamilton, Ohio on December 18, 1955, the daughter of Joseph and Eva Ford Miller.

 

Heidi had been a homemaker and was of the Baptist Faith. She enjoyed doing word searches, listening to music, and spending time with her great grand-babies.

 

She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Miller; a sister, Pamela Starke; a brother, Daniel Miller; and a great grandson, Zechariah Bennett.

Phallis J. Crockett, 78, of Columbia, KY died Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at Baptist Health in Lexington, KY.  He was born in Jamestown, KY on December 23, 1942 to the late Frank and Clara Wiggington Crockett.

 

Mr. Crockett was a member of the Bearwallow United Methodist Church and loved horses and whittling.

James M. Batts, 85, a Henry County, KY native, passed away suddenly at his home with family on November 8, 2021. 


The 41 years he spent at Kentucky Farm Bureau were his greatest pride and joy leading up to a wonderful 24 years of retirement on beautiful Lake Cumberland. He enjoyed 65 years of marriage to Shirley, together having a daughter and son, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

John E. Nall, 81, of Columbia, KY died Monday, December 13, 2021 at 2:25 A.M. at TJ Health/ Columbia. He was born in Vine Grove, KY on June 21, 1940 to the late Jacob Allen and Katherine Keith Nall. 

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Nall on May 10, 1991; twin sons, Clinton & Quinton Nall in 1964; and two sisters: Martha Nall and Anna Hater.

 

John retired from the Louisville Police Department and also retired as Vice-President of Claims from Celina Insurance Group. He was a member of Columbia Christian Church and most recently attended Bernard Ridge Church of God. He served on the Westlake Regional Hospital Board for several years, a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Blue Knights.

John William Folden, 48, of Columbia, KY died Saturday, December 11, 2021 at 11:53 P.M. at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset. He was born in Danville, Illinois on January 26, 1973.

 

John was a former truck driver & mechanic, a very active Mason and was a member of several different Lodges, a member of the York Rites, and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

 

He was preceded in death by father, Clayton Folden and his mother-in-law, Sue Wise.

BOBBY STEPHENS, 85, ELI, KY


Bobby Stephens, 85, of the Eli Community of Russell County, KY passed away on Friday, December 10, 2021 at his home. Bobby was born August 4, 1936 in Russell County, a son of the late Urias and Ora C. Stephens. 
 

He worked as a welder for Arvin Muffler Plant in Indiana for many years, and later was master mechanic at the Ford Garage in Russell Springs. Bobby served 4 years as a Russell County Sheriff’s Deputy in the mid-seventies. He raised tobacco and farmed for years, and for a time, raised Tennessee Walking horses. After public work, Bobby ran his own mechanic shop at home.

Mary Katherine Cassaday, 81, of Edmonton passed away Thursday, December 9, 2021 at NHC Healthcare in Glasgow. She was born May 3, 1940 in Metcalfe County to the late Jim and Cecile Hamilton Kinnaird. 

 
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Cassaday.
 
Mary Katherine retired from the Metcalfe County School system after 32 years of service. After retirement she stayed very active studying genealogy, travelling, scrapbooking and writing. Mary Katherine was a member of the Metcalfe County Historical Society, former Edmonton Presbyterian Church and Daughters of The American Revolution.

Elvy Lee Warren, 80, of the Pellyton community in Adair County passed peacefully fro this life on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 after an extended illness. Born on March 26, 1941 to the late Paul and Eula (Burton) Warren. 
 
He had made a profession of faith in Christ and was of the Christian faith. Mr. Warren was a retiree of the University of Louisville, having been employed in the maintenance department over 30 years. He was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed hunting ginseng or playing his guitar and singing.

Eugene “Gene” Bradshaw, 76, of Russell Springs, KY passed away on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at the Jean Waddle Hospice Care Center in Somerset. He was born May 22, 1945 in the Bernard Ridge community of Russell County, the son of the late Vernon and Parthena McQueary Bradshaw.  
 
He married Linda Hill on January 20, 1965. Gene was a mechanic for Russell Sportswear before becoming the owner and operator of B & M Feeds of Russell Springs, KY which did business for over 30 years.  
 
Gene was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a well-known bird dog trainer and had clients reaching as far as New York state, having trained many dogs over the years. Gene and his wife, Linda, attended Dunnville First Baptist Church.

He professed faith in Christ and was a member of Cold Springs Primitive Baptist Church. He loved reading his Bible and was a good Christian man. Arthur was a retired contractor and real estate agent. He enjoyed being with his family and visiting with friends. He loved fishing with his brothers and traveling.

 

He was also preceded in death by 3 brothers: Clifford Giles, Tommy Giles and Alvin D. Giles & wife, Shirley, and 5 nephews.

 

He united in marriage to Betty Ellis April 8, 1977.

Bernard “R.B.” Janes, 96, of Columbia, KY died Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at Fair Oaks Nursing Home in Jamestown, KY.  He was born in Columbia, KY on December 27, 1924 to the late Freeman and Leora Hamilton Janes. 

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, LV Sexton Janes; a son, Richie Janes; and 3 sisters: Chloristeen Hrastinski, Edra Kelsey and Orilla Stone.

 

Mr. Janes was a member of the Milltown Methodist Church and a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a farmer and enjoyed shooting pool, fishing and playing Rook.

Shirley Mae Bush Giles, 82, of Columbia, KY died Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at the Russell County Hospital. She was born in Adair County on February 12, 1939 to the late Walter and Amanda Corbin Bush. 
 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin D. Giles.

 

Mrs. Giles was a member of the Barnett’s Creek United Methodist Church and a former member of the Pellyton Homemakers. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

JEFFREY CORNELL, 65, BREEDING, KY

 

Jeffrey S. “Jeff” Cornell, 65, of the Breeding community of Adair County, KY died Saturday, December 4, 2021 at TJ Samson Hospital in Glasgow. He was born December 22, 1955 to the late Lawrence Verner and June Etta Dart Cornell.   

 

Jeff was a member of Columbia United Methodist Church, a U.S. Air Force veteran having served three tours of duty in the Vietnam War, retired from the Adair County EMS, where he had been an EMT Instructor and a master craftsman.

MARSHALL D. POPPLEWELL, 85, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY

 
Marshall D. Popplewell, 85, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Saturday, December 4, 2021 at Fair Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation in Jamestown, KY.  He was born August 7, 1936 in Russell County, a son of the late Henry and Edna McGowan Popplewell. 
 
Marshall was a dock worker at Alligator 1 Marina for 45 years and a cattle farmer. He was a devoted member of Square Oak Separate Baptist Church. Marshall loved his family and enjoyed “picking” on his kids and grandkids. 
 
In addition to his parents, Marshall was preceded in death by one sister, Addelien Dunbar.

M. Lynwood Goff, 92, of Louisville, KY died Saturday, December 4, 2021 at the University of Louisville Hospital. He was born March 3, 1929 in Adair County, KY to the late James and Virginia Hunn Goff. 
 
Lynwood was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict, of the Baptist faith and retired from Baptist Hospital Highlands.  He enjoyed his family that includes his dog, Max, and loved to shop with his family at yard sales and thrift stores.  He will be missed by his family on earth but celebrated with his heavenly family.
 
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Stone Goff and 5 siblings: Frances Lewis, Christine Cain, Elna Newton, Kathryn Goff and Anthony Goff.

Dorothy Burton Gaskin, 71, formerly of Adair County, died November 25, 2021 in Inverness, Florida. She was born November 1, 1950.

LINDA CAROL WALL DURHAM, 69, RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY

 

Linda Carol Wall Durham, 69, of Russell County, KY, daughter of the Myrtle Snow Rexroat of Russell County and the late Lawrence Lorne Wall, was born May 3, 1952 in Kings Mountain and departed this life on Friday, December 3, 2021.

 

She professed her faith in Christ and was of Baptist Faith. Linda was a homemaker most of her life and loved to go to yard sales. She was a loving mother, daughter and wife. 

 

She united in marriage to Ronald Clay Durham on March 13, 1968.

Her husband: Ronald Clay Durham of Russell Springs

4 daughters: Pamela Durham of Russell County; Tammy Sue Bradshaw of Columbia; Amanda Durham and fiancé Greg Gill of Campbellsville; and Jacklyn Durham of Russell County

3 grandchildren: Kathryn Warriner Nunnally of Indiana; Kaitlyn Warriner of Campbellsville; and Clay Warriner of Campbellsville

 

The services for Linda Durham will be held privately.

Arvist Lee “Pee Wee” Sinclair, 82, of Columbia, KY died Friday, December 3, 2021 at Norton Hospital in Louisville, KY. He was born on July 2, 1939 in Columbia, KY to the late Herbert and Ada Burton Sinclair.

 

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and retired from the Department of Forestry and Pride. Pee Wee was a member of Masonic Lodge #96 and he was a Kentucky Colonel. He enjoyed fishing, watching University of Kentucky ballgames and spending time with his family.

PAUL JOSEPH KIESLER, SR., 96, GREENVILLE, IN


Paul Joseph Kiesler, Sr., 96, of Greenville, Indiana passed away on Wednesday, December 1, 2021. He was born on June 2, 1925 in Palmyra, Indiana to the late Charles and Pearl (Brockman) Kiesler.
 

Paul was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a member of St. Mary Navilleton Catholic Church, a life-time member of the American Angus Association, and a 75-year member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1808 of Lanesville. He retired after 27 years of service from the Department of Agriculture and was a former President of the Board of Directors of KABA/Select Sires. Paul was life-time farmer and enjoyed working the family farm alongside his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was a devout Catholic and served as a Eucharistic minister and lector at his church. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend who leaves behind a legacy of hard work and devotion to faith.

Along with his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his infant brother, Glenn Kiesler; infant granddaughter, Caroline Horn; and 3 siblings: Frances Eveslage, Wilma Ott, and Dale Kiesler.

DONALD EUGENE HARE, 74, ELIZABETHTOWN, KY

 

Donald Eugene Hare, 74, of Elizabethtown, KY, died Friday, December 3, 2021 at home. 

SFC Hare retired from the U.S. Army. He was a Vietnam Veteran and received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and the Humanitarian Service Medal along with many other medals, decorations and awards. Don was well known for working and attending auctions and sitting at the Flea Market. He was a loving and proud grandfather. 

He was preceded in death by his son, Jeremy Allen Hare.
